Pie Chart Group 2

A pie chart is a circular graph divided into sectors, representing data proportions. It is used to display contributions of each value to a total, with various types including 2-D, 3-D, and doughnut charts. While pie charts are visually effective for simple comparisons, they can become cluttered with too much data and are not suitable for negative values.

Pie Chart
• A Pie Chart is a circular chart which is
divided into sectors in which area of each
sector represents the size of the data. It is

also known circle graph. Remember that

there are 360 degree in a circle so each
group in the pie chart will be a proportion
of 360 degree
TYPES AND USAGE
OF PIE CHART
TYPES: USAGE:

2.3-D Pie • IT IS USED TO DISPLAY

TYPES AND USAGE OF PIE
CHART
2-D Pie
USAGE:

• THE 2-D PIE USED TO

SHOW THE PROPORTIONS
OF A WHOLE. IT IS USED
WHEN NUMBERS EQUAL
100%. THE CHART
CONTAINS ONLY A FEW PIE
SLICES (MANY SLICES MAKE
THE ANGLES HARD TO
ESTIMATE).
TYPES AND USAGE OF PIE
CHART
USAGE:

• The Pie of pie used to

show the proportions of a
whole. In pie of pie we
can take so values from
fi rst pie and combine
them in second pie to
make small percentage
more readable or highlight
the value in second pie.

VALUES FROM FIRST PIE
AND COMBINE THEM IN

TYPES AND USAGE OF PIE
CHART
3-D Pie
USAGE:

• The 3-D Pie used to show

the proportions of a whole.
It is used when numbers
100%. The chart contains
only a few pie slices (many
slices make the angles hard
to estimate).
TYPES AND USAGE OF PIE
CHART
Doughnut
USAGE:

• The Doughnut used to

show the proportions of a
whole. It is used when
there are multiple series
that relate to the large
sum.
Advantages of a Pie
Chart
• A simple and easy-to-understand picture.

• It represents data visually as a fractional part of a whole, which

can be an eff ective communication tool for the even uninformed
audience.

• It enables the audience to see a data comparison at a glance to

make an immediate analysis or to understand information quickly.

• The need for readers to examine or measure underlying numbers

themselves can be removed by using this chart.

• To emphasize points you want to make, you can manipulate pieces

of data in the pie chart.
Disadvantages of a Pie
Chart
• Pie charts become less eff ective with too much data, becoming crowded and
hard to read.

• Even with data labels, clarity decreases as more data is added.

• Pie charts represent one data set, making comparisons diffi cult.

• Comparing non-adjacent slices can confuse readers.

• Visual impact may lead to inaccurate conclusions, rather than data-driven

insights.

• Negative values are hard to interpret, making pie charts unsuitable when
negative data is present.
Sample Pie Graph Problem:

A survey was conducted among 100 students to determine their favorite subjects. The results are
shown in the pie chart below:

Pie Chart:

- Math: 30%
- Science: 25%
- English: 20%
- History: 15%
- Art: 10%

Problem:

How many students chose Math as their favorite subject?

1. Identify the relevant information: The pie chart shows that 30% of the students chose Math
as their favorite subject.
2. Calculate the number of students: Since there are 100 students in total, we can calculate the
number who chose Math as follows:

- Number of students who chose Math = (30/100) * 100 = 30

Answer: 30 students chose Math as their favorite subject.
