Lesson 3:

Multiplying Polynomials
Multiplying Monomials
3 5
 2x  4x = -8x 8

8
(9r )(7 r ) = 63r 9
Multiplying Monomials and Polynomials
Use the Distributive Property

1. -4(5 + x) = -20 – 4x
2. 2x(x – 4) = 2x2 – 8x
3. -8y3(y2 + y) = -8y5 – 8y4
4. -3x2(2x3 + x2 – 3x) = -6x5 – 3x4 + 9x3
5. xy(x – y + 5) = x2y – xy2 + 5xy
Multiplying Binomials
Multiply every term in the second binomial
by every term in the first binomial

• Multiply (x + 1)(x + 3)

(x + 1)(x + 3) = x2 + 3x + x + 3
= x2 + 4x + 3
Multiplying Binomials
• Multiply (3t – 2)(5t – 4)

(3t – 2)(5t – 4) = 15t2 –12t –10t +8

= 15t2 – 22t + 8
Multiplying Binomials
• Multiply (x2 + 1)(5x - 3)

(x2 + 1)(5x - 3) = 5x3 - 3x2 +5x -3

= 5x3 - 3x2 + 5x - 3
Multiplying Polynomials
Multiply every term in the second polynomial
by every term in the first polynomial.

(x + 2)(x2 + 4x – 3)

= x3 + 4x2 – 3x + 2x2 + 8x - 6

= x3 + 6x2 + 5x - 6
Multiplying Polynomials
Multiply every term in the second polynomial
by every term in the first polynomial.

(3m – 4)(2m2 – 3m + 1)

= 6m3 – 9m2 + 3m – 8m2 + 12m – 4

= 6m3 – 17m2 + 15m – 4
Find the area of the triangle.

A = 1/2bh
6x
meters = ½(5x – 2)(6x)
(5x – 2) = ½(30x2 – 12x)
meters = 15x2 – 6x
MULTIPLY
 (x – 5)(x + 5)
= x2 + 5x – 5x – 25
= x – 25
2

 (2x + 1)(2x – 1)
= 4x2 – 2x + 2x – 1
= 4x2 – 1
(a + b)(a – b) = a2 – b2
MULTIPLY
 (3t + 4s)(3t – 4s)
= 9t2 – 16s2

 (x2 + y )(x – y )
2 2 2

= x4 – y4
SQUARING BINOMIALS

(x + 5) 2

(x + 5)(x + 5)
x2 + 5x + 5x + 25
x + 10x + 25
2
MULTIPLY:
(3 – 2x)
2

(3 – 2x)(3 – 2x)
9 – 6x – 6x + 4x 2

9 – 12x + 4x 2
