Introduction
• Radiation interception refers to the
ability of solid structures to
absorb, reflect or transmit
radiation.
• This concept is significant in
various fields including architecture
engineering and environmental
science.
• The efficiency of the intersection
depends on the factor such as
material properties, surface
characteristics and color, albedo
etc.
Radiation Interception
Types
Geometric Principles
.
The amount of radiation intercepted by an object is
determined by :

• Shape and size of the object

• Angle of incidence of incoming radiation
• Surface area exposed to radiation
Direct Solar Radiation and
Shape Factor
• Direct solar radiation is the sunlight that reaches a
surface without scattering.
• Shape factor: It determines how much radiation a
shape absorb or emit, based on its orientation,
curvature and exposure to radiation.
Analysis of Different Shapes
Diffused Radiation

• Diffused radiation is sunlight that is scatered in

different directions by molecules, dust, and clouds
in atmosphere.

• It doesn’t travel in a staight line.

• Types: short wave diffuse radiation, reflected solar

radiation and long wave radiation.
Factors affecting radiation interception

• Weather conditions
• Surface area
• Surface texture
• Orientation
• Material properties
Applications
• Architecture: Reflective coatings and
insulation regulate indoor temperature.
• Aerospace: Radiation shielding protects
spacecraft from cosmic radiation.
• Agriculture: Greenhouses optimize radiation
for plant growth.
• Renewable Energy: Solar panels maximize
radiation absorption for energy conservation.
Conclusions
• Understanding the geometric principles
of radiation interception allows us to
design better structures that optimize
energy efficiency.

• By analyzing shapes, angles, and

surface areas, architects and engineers
can create buildings that effectively
harness solar energy, improving
sustainability.
