Project-Based

Learning: Design and

Implementation
• Objectives
• By the end of this session,
participants will be able to:
• Define Project-Based Learning (PBL)
and its significance in education.
• Design a PBL project framework
suitable for their classroom.
• Implement strategies for effective
PBL in their teaching practice.
• Reflect on the challenges and benefits
of PBL in their educational context.

Teaching is not a matter
of transmitting knowledge,
but requires students to
construct knowledge with
their own activities,
building on what they
already understand.
What is Project-Based
Learning?
PBL is a comprehensive, deep learning
approach to classroom teaching and learning
that engages students in the investigation of
authentic problems
Key elements of PBL
• A challenging problem or
question
• Sustained inquiry
• Authenticity
• Student voice and choice
• Reflection
• Critique and revision
• Public product
PBL is Skill-Based
To learn collaboration –
work in teams
To learn critical thinking –
take on complex problems
To learn oral communication –
present ideas
To learn written communication –
reflective
writing

Design and implementation
• Students are presented with a prompt, problem, or
challenge to ignite curiosity
• Students craft a driving question
• Students conduct active research to answer their
driving question
• Students document their learning process and provide
feedback to peers
• Students create a product to demonstrate their learning
and understanding
• Students present and share their work with an authentic
audience
• Students reflect on the process and receive feedback
• Students are assessed on their learning and
understanding of the product and the process
Project Examples
The energy crisis
Grade level 6 : Science, Math, GP
Description: Students are confronted with the
sudden realization that their school is using too
much electricity. Together, they must work in
teams to solve the energy crisis problem at their
school. Students create a driving question that
will carry them throughout the project. Each
team researches and learns about fossil fuels,
renewable energy, and alternative energy sources.
After being provided real data from the school,
each group of students creates their own solution
to the problem and presents their ideas to local
community members.

Write down one key takeaway and one

question you still have about PBL.
PBL Assessment
One way of creating proficiency levels for PBL is to use
Bloom’s Taxonomy, which consists of six levels, from
lowest to highest: knowledge, comprehension,
application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

The lower level involves rote memorization. At this level,

students might develop a poster or PowerPoint
presentation with facts. At the higher levels, students
are encouraged to produce more complicated projects
(i.e., community-based). This can promote
differentiation of instruction based on students’
Project Evaluative Measures
Does the project
• Meet standards?
• Engage students?
• Focus on essential understanding?
• Encourage higher-level thinking?
• Teach literacy and reinforce basic skills?
• Allow all students to succeed?
• Use clear, precise assessments?
• Require the sensible use of technology?
• Address “authentic” issues?
Project Evaluation
(Self and Peer Assessment)
• Take time to reflect individually and as a
group

• Share feelings and experiences

• Discuss what worked well

• Discuss what needs to be changed/revised

• Share ideas that will lead to new inquiries

and projects
Reflective Evaluation
• What did I/we learn?
• Did I/we collaborate effectively?
• What skills did I/we learn?
• What skills do I/we need to
practice?
• What was the quality of my/our
work?
• Where can I/we improve?

PBL: Think/Pair/Share
• What ideas do you have for a project?
• What question will you ask your students?
• Write down possible questions that will
“launch” a project-based learning activity.
• Choose one of your questions. Brainstorm
with your colleague sitting next to you.
Take notes (concept map).
• What subjects can be “woven” into this
PBL activity?
