StatsProba Q3 Lesson 6 Converting Normal Random Variable To A Standard Normal Variable and Vice Versa

The document explains how to convert a normal random variable to a standard normal variable using z-scores, which measure the distance from the mean in standard deviation units. It provides several examples demonstrating the calculation of z-scores and the interpretation of results in the context of normal distributions. Additionally, it discusses the area under the normal curve and the percentage of scores within certain ranges based on given means and standard deviations.

Converting a Normal Random

Variable to a Standard
Normal Variable and Vice-
Versa
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the
students are expected to :

a. Converting a Normal
Random Variable to a
Standard Normal Variable
and Vice-Versa
Z - Score
• A z - score measure the distance between an observation and the mean
measures in units of standard deviation
Formula:
Where:
z - standard normal score or z-score
x - any data value in a normal distribution
- mean

• If the z-score is positive, the positive score is above the mean. If the z-
score is 0, the score is the same as the mean. If the z-score is negative, the
score is below the mean
Example 1:
Determine the z value for each of the following z values for a
normal distribution with .

a. x = 12 b. x = 8 c. x = 22 d. x = 25

z = -1.33 z = -2.67 z=2 z=3

Example 2:
Given the mean of a population of reading scores. Find the z-value that
corresponds to a score

z=2

Thus, the z-value that corresponds to

the raw score 58 is 2 in a population
distribution. The score of 58 is above
the average.
Example 3:
Locate the z value that corresponds to PE score of 39 given
that .

z = -1

Thus, the z-value that corresponds to

the raw score 39 is -1 in a population
distribution. The score of 39 is below
the average.
Example 4:
A consumer group tested a sample of 100 light bulbs. It found that the mean life
expectancy of the bulbs was 842 h, with a standard deviation of 90. One particular
light bulb from the DuraBright Company had a z-score of 1.2. What was the life
span on this light bulb.

+
+
x = 108 + 842
X = 950
The light bulb had a life span of 950 h.
Example 5:
For a continuous random variable that has a normal distribution
with a mean of 20 and a standard deviation of 4, find the area
under the normal curve from x = 20 and x =27

The area between z=0

and z = 1.75 is 0.4599.
Therefore, the are under
the normal curve
z=0 z = 1.75 between x = 20 and x =
27 is 0.4599.
Example 6:
The scores of a group of students in a standardized test are normally
distributed with mean of 60 and standard deviation of 8. Answer the
following:
a. How many percent of the students got below 72?

z = 1.5
= .4332
P(z < 1.5) = 0.5 + 0.4332
P(z < 1.5) = 0.9332
Therefore, about 93.32% of the group got below 72.
Example 6:
The scores of a group of students in a standardized test are normally distributed

b. What percent of the group scored between 58 and 76?

with mean of 60 and standard deviation of 8. Answer the following:

Z = -0.25 Z=2
= .0987 = .4772

P(-0.25 < z < 2) = 0.4772+0.0987

P(-0.25 < z < 2) = 0.5759
Therefore, about 57.59% of the group got a score between 58 to 76.
Example 6:
The scores of a group of students in a standardized test are normally distributed with

c. If there were 250 students who took the test, about how many
mean of 60 and standard deviation of 8. Answer the following:

students scored higher than 64?

Z = 0.5
= .1915
P(z > 0.5) = 0.5-.1915
P(z > 0.5) = 0.3085
Since there were 250 students who took the test,
about (250)(0.3085) = 77.13 or 77 students got a
score higher than 64.
