Exploring Z
Exploring Z
LESSON 4.1
OBJECTIVES
• identify the difference between
sample data and population data;
• constructs a normal curve with given
values;
• find the Z score for sample data and
population data
To determine z, use the computing formula:
𝑋 −𝜇
𝑧= ( 𝑧 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑜𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎)
𝜎
𝑋−𝑋
𝑧= ( 𝑧 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 )
𝑠
where:
z = z-value X = given measurement
μ = population mean σ = population standard deviation
X = sample mean s = sample standard deviation
EXAMPLE
1. In a population of Reading scores, the mean μ = 50
and the standard deviation σ = 4 . Find the z value
that corresponds to a score X = 58.
𝑋 −𝜇
𝑧=
𝜎
58 −50
𝑧=
8 4
𝑧=
4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
38 42 46 50 54 58 62
EXAMPLES
1. A mathematics score is 71. If it is given that μ = 80
and σ = 6, what is the corresponding z-score?
2. Scores in a Mathematics Test
Given: X = 20, X = 26 and s = 4 Compute the
xxcorresponding-score
ACTIVITY NO. 5, DRAW A NORMAL CURVE
AND FIND THE Z SCORE
1. Scores on a history test have average of 67 with
standard deviation of 6. What is the z-score for a
student who earned a 76 on the test?
