Water Jet

Water jet weft insertion is a process that uses water pressure to insert filling yarn into fabric, characterized by low energy consumption, high productivity, and low maintenance. It requires hydrophobic yarns and specific machine components resistant to corrosion. The system operates with a high-pressure pump and utilizes thermal knives for cutting the weft yarn, ensuring precise insertion and drying of the fabric on the loom.

WATER JET WEFT INSERTION

DEFINATION
The process of drawing filling yarn from the supply
package & inserting this filling yarn into shed with
the help of water pressure/water jet is called Water
Jet weft insertion.
MAIN FEATURES OF WATER JET WEFT
INSERTION
 Water jet loom consumes low energy.
 higher productivity
 Low noise level
 Very low maintenance in comparison to
any other looms.
 Suitable for light and medium weight
fabrics.
MAIN FEATURES OF WATER JET WEFT
INSERTION
 Warp and weft yarn must be water insensitive. i.e.
hydrophobic in nature.

 Thermoplastic yarns like nylon, polyester, polypropylene,

glass, acetate etc. are used.

 When warp is sized it must be water insensitive size like

acrylic ester size.

 All machine parts that get wet must be resistant to corrosion.

 Thermoplastic yarns needs cutting of weft yarn by a heated
blade and the provision of heat selvedge by fusing.

 No compressor is required but each water jet loom is

provided with its own miniature pump to feed water under
pressure to nozzle.

 To get best results water used should not scale, rust or erode
the high precision components of the machine.

 The cloth is dried on the loom by means of heater.

WORKING
 Weft yarn is fed from supply package to accumulator.

 Weft yarn passes through tension regulator & weft clump.

 When weft insertion takes place, the weft clump loses its
hold. The clump opening time depends upon
o Reed width
o Speed of loom
 The pump enters into action with the help of cam fitted on
the main shaft & cam lever.
 The initial water jet straightens the small piece of weft from
nozzle to cutter or thermal knife at 900. The time duration for
yarn straightening is 50~300. It depends upon the yarn count.
It is called the guide angle or lead angle.

 The yarn clump is opened & weft is inserted by pressurized

water jet at 90 + lead angle.

 The amount of water is determined by the size of pump &

stroke of plunger. Higher the stroke more will be the amount
of water.
 Amount of water depends upon
o Type of yarn (count, twist, texture)
o R.P.M of loom.
o Width of machine
o Plunger diameter.

 After insertion the weft thread is held straight by leno

threads.

 Thermal knives or cutters cut the weft on picking & receiving

sides. The distance of cutter from selvedge is 2 mm.
Temperature of knife is up to 500oC and it depends upon the
count of yarn.
 The electrical feeler senses the weft yarn on receiving side
and it is placed between the leno ends and catch cord ends. It
stops the machine when weft is absent at 320o of crank angle.

 Catch cords: It is on receiving side of machine and holds the

inserted weft. It should be strong yarns woven with plain
weave. The cords are 4.5 mm from selvedge of cloth.

 Drying Device: It is fitted near the breast beam in front of

loom. It sucks the humidity absorbed by the fabric.
Working of Pump
 High pressure water pump is used to feed the water in
the nozzle at very high pressure.
 Water pump consists of cylinder and piston which is
connected to the water tank through pipeline.
 The vertical arm of L- shape lever is connected to the
piston and an antifriction bowl is mounted at the end of
the horizontal arm of L-shape lever.
 This anti friction bowl touches the eccentric cam.
Working of pump
 When the cam rotates, the piston attached with vertical
arm of L- shape lever makes a reciprocating motion.
 Water is sucked from water tank by pump and is fed it
to the water jet nozzle.
 The nozzle opening and closing gets controlled by
magnetic valves.
 The opening and closing timings of electromagnetic
valve, weft brake, and water supply of nozzle are
controlled by control computer.
