1.DISTRIBUTED MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS OVERVIEW

Distributed Multimedia Systems are systems designed to distribute and

manage multimedia content across multiple devices and networks.

Main Components:

• Information Server – Stores and processes multimedia content.

• Wide Area Network (WAN) – Connects users and servers for data
transfer.

• Multimedia Client/User – The end-user device where multimedia

content is accessed or manipulated.
1.1 ARCHITECTURE OF DISTRIBUTED
MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS

• Three key components:

1. Information Server
2. Wide Area Network (WAN)
3. Multimedia Client (User)
1.2 MULTIMEDIA CLIENT
• Equipped with hardware (computers, speakers, monitors, etc.)
• Plays, displays, and interacts with multimedia objects.
1.3 WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)

• Connects servers and users

• Enables communication and data transfer for multimedia
delivery
1.4 INFORMATION SERVER
• Manages multimedia objects and databases
• Integrates, synchronizes, and delivers multimedia content
• Supports multiple users and networks
2. MULTI-USER SYSTEM
COMPONENTS
• Includes:
1. Application Software

2. Document Store

3. Image and Still Video Store

4. Audio and Video Store

5. Object Directory Service Agent

6. Component Service Agent

7. User Interface Agent

8. Networks (LAN/WAN)
2.1 APPLICATION SOFTWARE
• Handles business processes
• Tasks include:

1.Object Selection & Retrieval

2.Component Display
3.Display Management & Editing
2.2 DOCUMENT STORE
• Stores container documents and embedded multimedia objects
• Manages links, metadata, and storage locations
• Supports linked object management
2.3 IMAGE & STILL VIDEO STORE

• Stores compressed, annotated, multi-image documents

• Uses optical disk libraries and magnetic cache storage
• Supports shared access and high-volume migration
2.4 AUDIO & VIDEO STORE
• Stores large, isochronous media files
• Supports compressed storage, playback, and streaming
• Ensures smooth playback across users
2.5 OBJECT DIRECTORY
SERVICE AGENT
• Tracks and identifies multimedia objects
• Provides directory listing and status management
• Modular domain and server access support
2.6 COMPONENT SERVICE AGENT

• Manages object creation, playback, and storage

• Supports multiple formats and services
• Present on both client and server sides
2.7 USER INTERFACE SERVICE AGENT

• Manages UI display and multimedia rendering

• Services: object creation, playback, scaling
• Acts as the client-side agent and display manager
