Transforms and Partial Differential Equations
Course Objectives
The purpose of learning this course is to:
1. Introduce the concept of analyzing discrete time signals & systems in the time and frequency domain
through mathematical representation.
2. Study the various time to frequency domain transformation techniques.
3. Understand the computation algorithmic steps for Fourier Transform.
4. Study about filters and their design for digital implementation
5. Introduce the programmable digital signal processor & its application.
Unit I INTRODUCTION 9 Hours
Classification of systems: Continuous, discrete, linear, causal, stable, dynamic, recursive, time variance; classification of
signals: continuous and discrete, energy and power; mathematical representation of signals; spectral density; sampling
techniques, quantization, quantization error, Nyquist rate, aliasing effect. Digital signal representation.
Unit II DISCRETE TIME SYSTEM ANALYSIS 9 Hours
Z-transform and its properties, inverse z-transforms; difference equation – Solution by z-transform, application to discrete
systems - Stability analysis, frequency response – Convolution – To perform onvolution between two vectors using
MATLAB.

Unit III DISCRETE FOURIER TRANSFORM & COMPUTATION 3 0 09 Hours

Discrete Fourier Transform- properties, magnitude and phase representation - Computation of DFT using FFT algorithm – DIT &DIF
using radix 2 FFT – Butterfly Structure. To compute DFT and IDFT of a given sequence using MATLAB.
Unit IV DESIGN OF DIGITAL FILTERS 9 Hours
FIR & IIR filter realization – Parallel & cascade forms. FIR design: Windowing Techniques – Need and choice of windows – Linear phase
characteristics. IIR design: Analog filter design – Butterworth and Chebyshev approximations; digital design using impulse invariant and
bilinear transformation - Warping, prewarping -Frequency transformation.
Unit V DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSORS 9 Hours
Introduction – Architecture of one DSP processor for motor control – Features – Addressing Formats– Functional modes - Introduction to
Commercial Processors.
Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will have the ability to
CO1 : Illustrate the digital system representation.
CO2 : Analyze the Discrete time system using transformation.
CO3 : Compute the transformation techniques for time to frequency conversion.
CO4 : Design suitable digital FIR, IIR algorithm for the given specification.
CO5 : Identify digital signal processor for application development.
