Today’s Technology:
Technology can enable you to more efficiently and
effectively access and search for information; share
personal ideas, photos, and videos with friends,
family, and others; communicate with and meet
other people; manage finances; shop for goods and
services; play games or access other sources of
entertainment; keep your life and activities
organized; and conduct business activities.

Digital Literacy – involves having a current

knowledge and understanding of computers, mobile
devices, the web and related technologies.

Let’s talk about
COMPUTERS
-is an electronic device,
operating under control of
instructions stored on it’s
own memory, that can
accept data (input),
process the data
according to specified
rules, produce information
(output), and store
information for future use.

PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Laptop – a ”notebook computer”, is a thin,
lightweight mobile computer with a screen in its
lid and a keyboard in its base. Designed to fit in
the lap for easy transport.

Tablets – smaller than a laptop but larger than a

phone, a tablet is a thin lighter weight mobile
computer that has touch screen.
Desktop – a personal computer designed to be in
a stationary position, where all components fit
under a desk or table.

Server – is a computer
dedicated to to providing
one or more services to
other computers or
devices on a network.

Network – is a collection
of computers and devices
connected together.

MOBILE AND GAME
DEVICES
Mobile Device - a computing device small enough to hold in
your hand.
- can be categorized as computers because they
operate under the control of instructions.

- a mobile phone that

performs many of the
functions of a computer,
typically having a
touchscreen interface,
internet access, and an
operating system capable of
running downloaded
applications. Intro. to Computing

MOBILE AND GAME
DEVICES
Four popular types of messages that you can send with
smartphones;

1. Voice Mail Message – a short audio recording sent to

or from a smartphone or other mobile
2. Text Message – a short note, typically fewer than 300
characters, sent to or from a smartphone or other mobile
device
3. Picture Message – a photo or other image, sometimes
along with sound and text, sent to or from a smartphone or
mobile device
4. Video Message – a short video clip, usually about 30
seconds.

e-book readers, and handheld game devices
becoming obsolete as more and more
smartphones and tablets include their
functionality?
Digital Service converge
- means that consumers may need fewer devices for
functionality
- is the phenomenon of combining different media,
information, voice telephony, television, etc., into a single
service.

DATA AND INFORMATION
Computer process data (input) into
information (output) and often
store the data, resulting information
for future use
DATA - is a collection of
unprocessed items, which can
include text, numbers, images,
audio, and video.

INFORMATION – conveys meaning

to users.

INPUT DEVICE
– any hardware component that
allows you to enter data and
instructions into a computer or
mobile device.
OUTPUT DEVICE
– conveys information from a
computer mobile device to one or
more people

MEMORY AND STORAGE

MEMORY – consists of electronic components that

stores instructions waiting to be executed and data
needed by those instructions.
STORAGE
- holds data, instructions, and information for future
use.
- records (writes) and/or retrieves (reads)items to
and from storage media.
