Chapter One

The document provides an overview of manufacturing processes, defining manufacturing as the conversion of raw materials into finished products. It categorizes manufacturing processes into forming and shaping, casting, machining, and joining, and emphasizes the importance of material selection and properties. Additionally, it discusses the fitting shop, its operations, and the tools used in fitting work.

1.1 Introduction to Manufacturing
What is manufacturing?
• Manufacturing is process of converting raw materials into usable products.
Manufactured items has monetary worth(added value) than raw materials.
• Process: is a sequence of operation through which a product is manufactured.
• Manufacturing process: MPs are the steps through which raw materials are
transformed in to finished products.

and properties
 All manufactured products are made from sort of material. Hence,
those who are interested in manufacturing should be very
concerned with material selection.
 An extremely wide variety of materials are available to the
manufacturer today. The manufacturer must consider the
properties of these materials with respect to the desired properties
of the manufactured goods.
What is materials processing?
Imparting changes in material:
 Geometry (shape, size)
 Materials properties:
 Strength
 Hardness
 Toughness and etc
Categories of Manufacturing Process
1. Forming and Shaping:
• Creating of metallic components by deforming the metal but not by
removing, cutting, or breaking any part.
Examples: rolling, forging, extrusion, drawing, sheet forming.
2. Casting: is a manufacturing process in which a solid dissolved in
to a liquid, heated to appropriate temperature, and then added
(pouring of the molten metal) into a mold or cavity.
3. Machining: removal of extra materials from a work piece.
Examples: Turning, facing, boring, drilling, grinding
4. Joining: connecting or fastening more than one work pieces
together.
Examples: Welding, brazing, soldering, mechanical joining
1.2. Fitting
• Fitting shop is a place where fitting or assembling work is carried
out. Some repair / maintenance and Die punch work is also carried
out in Fitting shop.
• The operations required for the same are usually carried out on a
work bench, hence the term bench work is also added with the
name fitting.
• The bench work and fitting plays an important role in engineering.
Although in today's industries most of the work is done by
automatic machines which produces the jobs with good accuracy
but still it (job) requires some hand operations called fitting
operations.
Fitting Tools
• Fitting shop tools are classified as below:
 Work Holding Devices/ Clamping Tools.
 Measuring and Marking Tools.
 Cutting Tools.
 Striking Tools.
 Drilling Tools.
 Threading Tools.
