 As either a professional technical communicator, an


employee at a company or a consumer, you can expect
to write different types of correspondences.

 Technical communication takes many different forms.
 You will have to communicate both orally and in writing.
 Rely on various types of correspondence and technology,
dependent upon:
 Audience
 Purpose
 Situation

 Many communication channels overlap in terms of


purpose and audience.
 E.g.
 Requesting information from the vendor.
 Communicate bad news.

 To succeed in job, you need to write and speak effectively
to others --- constantly.
 Technical communication is a significant factor in your
work experience for several reasons, including it’s
importance for:
 Business
 Time
 Money
 Interpersonal Communication
BUSINESS
 Technical communication is not a frill or an occasional
endeavor.
 It is a major component of the work environment.
 Through technical correspondence, employees:
 Maintain good customer-client relations (follow-up letters)
 Ensure that work is accomplished on time (directive memos
or emails)
 Provide documentation that work has been completed.

 Generate income (sales letters, brochures, fliers)
 Keep machinery working (user manuals)
 Ensure that correct equipment is purchased (technical

 In addition to serving valuable purposes on the job,
communication is important because it is time
consuming.
 New hires might spend less time writing on the job.
A supervisor will spend more time directing the
subordinates through written correspondence
 Though you will spend a great deal of time writing on the
job
 You will spend even more communicating in other ways.

 Phone with vendors and clients
 Co workers

 Tells the audience that you think logically and express
your thoughts clearly.
