The presentation by Ms. Reena S More provides an overview of operating systems, defining them as essential software that serves as an interface between users and computer hardware. It covers the evolution, types, and functions of operating systems, including batch, multiprogrammed, time-shared, distributed, and real-time systems, along with user interfaces like CLI and GUI. The document emphasizes the necessity of an operating system for running applications and facilitating user interaction with computers.

First Chapter - Content
1. Introduction to Operating System
 What is Operating System:
 An Operating system (OS) is a software which
acts as an interface between the end user and
computer hardware.
 Every computer must have at least one OS to run
other programs.
 An application like Chrome, MS Word, Games,
etc needs some environment in which it will run
and perform its task
 The OS helps you to communicate with the
computer without knowing how to speak the
computer's language.
 It is not possible for the user to use any computer
or mobile device without having an operating
system.

3. Types of Operating System

Types of Operating System

Multiprogrammed
Batch OS Time Shared Multiprocessor Distributed Real Time Mobile OS
OS
Batch operating system
Batch processing means grouping the jobs of same needs to form a
batch.
By executing the jobs in a batch the setup operation is done only once
and multiple programs can be executed in the same setup.
Large amount of computer time is saved.
Batch OS Examples
Payroll system - Batch systems are ideal for making
payrolls. The salaries of employees can be printed at the end
of month by the batch systems. So the statements can be
made easy by using batch systems.

Bank statements - At the end of month the bank makes

statements for each account holder. So these bank statements
can be made easily by batch systems at the end of month.
Multiprogrammed Operating system
The process o executing multiple number of programs simultaneously
or concurrently is known as multiprogramming.
Multiprogramming increases CPU utilization by always having
something for the CPU to execute
More than one task/program/job/process can reside into the main
memory at one point of time. A computer running excel and firefox
browser simultaneously is an example of multiprogramming.
Multiprogrammed OS
Time Shared Operating System
Time sharing is a technique which enables many people, located at
various terminals, to use a particular computer system at the same
time.
Time-sharing or multitasking is a logical extension of
multiprogramming.
Processor's time which is shared among multiple users simultaneously
is termed as time- sharing.
Multiple jobs are executed by the CPU by switching so frequently.
Thus, the user can receives an immediate response.
Time Shared Operating System
Distributed Operating system
 Distributed operating system a software
model set over a collection of networked,
independent, communicating nodes which
are physically separate from one another.

 These independent components process jobs

which are assigned by multiple CPUs into
the network.

 A distributed operating system is the

extension of the network operating system
which supports highly integrated machines
which are connected to carry out a single
task.
Real Time Operating System
Real Time Operating System Example
 Traffic Signal controlling
 Satellite communication
 Banking Operations- NEFT,RTGS etc
Functions of Operating System
Command Line Interface
CLI permits users to put in writing commands associate degree
exceedingly in terminal or console window to interact with an
operating system.

CLI is a platform or medium wherever users answer a visible prompt

by writing a command and get the response from system, for this users
have to be compelled to kind command or train of command for
performing the task.
Graphical User Interface

GUI permits users to use the graphics to interact with an operating

system. In graphical user interface, menus are provided such as :
windows, scrollbars, buttons, wizards, painting pictures, alternative
icons etc. It’s intuitive, simple to find out and reduces psychological
feature load.

In GUI, the information is shown or presented to the user in any form
such as: plain text, videos, images, etc.
