Vector Differentiation and Its

Applications
A Student-Centric Active Learning
Session
Introduction
• Objective: Understand gradient, divergence,
and curl through collaborative activities
• Learning Outcomes (LO):
• 1. Define and compute gradient, divergence,
and curl
• 2. Apply vector differentiation in real-world
scenarios
• 3. Collaboratively solve vector operation
problems
Pro-Thinking Question
• "If you were asked to represent the flow of
heat in a metal rod or the spread of a
pollutant in water, how would you visualize it
mathematically?"

• Encourage students to think individually, then

share with a partner.
Gradient
• Definition: Measures the rate and direction of
change of a scalar field
• Formula: ∇f = (∂f/∂x) î + (∂f/∂y) ĵ + (∂f/∂z) k̂
• Example: f(x,y,z) = x² + y² + z²
• Steps: Calculate partial derivatives and
combine as a vector
Divergence
• Definition: Measures the magnitude of a
source or sink in a vector field
• Formula: ∇·F = (∂F₁/∂x) + (∂F₂/∂y) + (∂F₃/∂z)
• Example: F = (2x)î + (3y)ĵ + (4z)k̂
• Steps: Calculate partial derivatives and sum
them
Curl
• Definition: Measures the rotation of a vector
field
• Formula: ∇×F = [(∂F₃/∂y - ∂F₂/∂z) î + (∂F₁/∂z -
∂F₃/∂x) ĵ + (∂F₂/∂x - ∂F₁/∂y) k̂ ]
• Example: F = (yz)î + (zx)ĵ + (xy)k̂
• Steps: Calculate components and construct
the curl vector
Visualization of Gradient,
Divergence, and Curl
Active Learning Activities
• 1. Think-Pair-Share: Calculate gradient of
f(x,y,z) = x² + y² + z² at (1,1,1)
• 2. Jigsaw Method: Groups focus on gradient,
divergence, or curl and teach peers
Assessment Problems
• 1. Calculate the gradient of f(x,y,z) = x³ + y³ + z³
at (1,2,3)
• 2. Find the divergence of F = (x²)î + (y²)ĵ + (z²)k̂
• 3. Determine the curl of F = (y+z)î + (z+x)ĵ +
(x+y)k̂
• 4. Explain a scenario where zero curl implies
an irrotational field
