Secondary data refers to data that was originally collected for another purpose. It can save money and time compared to primary data collection. However, secondary data may be outdated, use different definitions or measurement units, or lack verification of accuracy. Typical objectives for using secondary data include fact finding, model building, and data mining to discover patterns about customers, products, and activities. Secondary data sources can be internal and proprietary to an organization, collecting data like sales volumes and customer complaints. External sources include books, government publications, media sources, and commercial sources providing market share data, demographics, consumer research, stock information, and other financial reports.
