What is Mapping /
Transformation ??
• To find the geometrical representation of a function of a complex variable, it
requires the usual practice of cartesian plotting, here a curve to a real function
y = f(x).
• In the complex domain, the function w = f(z)
i.e. u+iv= f(x+iy)
• Above equation involve 4 variable, hence a four dimensional region is required
to plot in the cartesian fashion, which is not possible.
• So, we make use of two complex planes, one for the variable z=x+iy, and the
other for the variable w=u+iv.
• Since, each point (x,y) in z-plane, there corresponds a point (u,v) in w-plane.
Linear Transformation / Mapping

• A mapping of the form w=az+b where, a & b are real or complex constants
is called as linear mapping or Transformation.
• In other words, the combination of translation, rotation, and magnification
is called as linear transformation.
Translation -> w=z+a
Magnification -> w=a.z
Rotation -> w=eiθ.z

Introduction to
Bilinear
Definition Transformations A Billinear transformation (Möbius
: transformations) is represented in the form of :

where a, b, c, and d are complex constants, this is called as bilinear fractional

transformation, or Mobius transformation. This transformation maps the
extended complex plane (including infinity) onto itself, preserving the
structure of circles and lines, making it an important tool in complex analysis
for studying geometric transformations.
CR0SS RATIO PROPERTY Mapping: This transformation maps
OF BILLINEAR z1,z2 and z3 to w1,w2 and w3
respectively, ensuring they are
TRANSFORMATION distinct.

1 Maps and Globe Projections :
. When you look at a world map, you’re seeing
Applications the spherical Earth projected onto a flat
: surface. This transformations help with this,
preserving angles and shapes in small areas.

2. Camera Lens Distortion Correction :

Billinear transformations are used in photo-

editing software to correct lens distortions, like
the curved edges you sometimes see in wide-
angle photos.
3. Navigation and GPS Systems :
GPS systems use Billinear transformations to
map the curved surface of the Earth onto a flat
screen, ensuring accurate location tracking.
