Lecture 11 (Design of Brick Masonry Foundation Contd.)
This lesson plan focuses on the design of brick masonry wall foundations, detailing the differences from brick pillar foundations and outlining design steps. Students will learn to calculate the depth, load, and width of the footing, as well as sketch the design. Homework involves designing a footing for a different wall specification, reinforcing the concepts taught in the lecture.

Lesson Plan 11
Structure II Design of brick masonry wall foundation
April 2019 Dinesh kaushik (Asst. Professor)
Content • Introduction to brick masonry wall foundation • Design problem • Solution • Homework Learning goals At the end of this lecture, students should be able to: • Understand the difference between brick pillar foundation design and wall foundation design. • Design brick masonry wall foundation • Understand and draw the sketch of brick masonry wall foundation Brick masonry wall foundation • All load bearing walls are provided foundation having depth not less than 500mm. • Wall foundation is also known as strip foundation. • The wall usually supports UDL (load from floor or roof slab), hence the wall foundation is designed for one meter length of wall. Brick masonry wall foundation Design steps for the design of wall foundation is same as that of brick pillar foundation with following exceptions- 1. Self wt. of footing and soil above it is taken as 10% of (W1 + W2). 2. As wall foundation is designed for 1 meter length of wall instead of size of footing (L x B), So we’ll determine only width (B) only because length is fixed as 1m. Design problem • Design and sketch the footing for 1 brick thick wall having 3m height, carrying UDL of 20kN/m. Use conventional bricks. Safe bearing capacity (SBC) of soil is 10 ton/m2. density of soil is 17kN/m3 and angle of repose is 30 degree. Use PCC (1:4:8) as foundation PCC. Solution Step 1- Minimum depth of foundation (D) Using Rankine’s formula D = (qc/λ){(1 – sinφ)/(1 + sinφ)}2 = 0.65m = 650mm As 650mm > 500mm hence OK Step 2- Design load for footing (per meter length) Considering one meter length of wall Superimposed load on wall (W1) = 20kN (given) Self wt. of wall (W2) = 1 x 0.2 x 3 x 19 = 13.11kN (Density of brick work = 19 kN/m3 assumed) Weight of the footing (W3) = 10 % of (W1+W2) = 3.31kN Solution Total design load = 36.42kN Step 3- Width of the footing a) Width by calculation Area of footing (A) = Design load/SBC = 0.36m2 A=LxB [here, L = 1m] Or, B = 0.36m = 360mm b) Width by stability criteria For square pillar, B = x + 2(b) + x[b = wall thickness] Assuming a projection beyond the face of first step (x) = 100mm Solution So, B = 660mm Hence providing footing width (B) as 660mm Step 4- Net upward pressure (p) p = (W1 + W2)/L x B = 50.17kN/m2 Step 5- Thickness of foundation PCC (d) Using relation, d = √[(6.p.x2.103)/(2.mr)] d = 78.90mm say 80mm Sketch of footing Homework • Design and sketch the footing for 1½ brick thick wall having 3m height, carrying UDL of 30kN/m. Use modular bricks. Safe bearing capacity (SBC) of soil is 110 kN/m2. density of soil is 19kN/m3 and angle of repose is 30 degree. Use PCC (1:3:6) as foundation PCC.
