Proportion and inverse proportion

1. We say that x is proportional to y if there is same change in both variables. i.e.,

it as x ∝ y.
if x increases then y also increases or x decreases then y also decreases. We write

x ∝ y ⇔ x = ky for some constant k. Here


2. We say that x is inversely proportional to y if there is opposite change in
variables. i.e., if x increases then y decreases or x decreases then y increases. We
write it as
x ∝ 1/y.
x ∝ 1/y ⇔ xy = k for some constant k. Here
