TECHNICAL MANUAL

STEP-BY-STEP CONFIGURATION OF
PORT FORWARDING

FOR

HIKVISION OR DAHUA NVR/DVR

USING MTN, AIRTEL, HUAWEI OR
MOBILY ROUTERS
Introduction

A Remote Surveillance System is a solution that allows monitoring of a specific

area especially in this context, the activities of each CBT Centre from JAMB’s
headquarters and other designated distant locations using technology. These
systems typically involve cameras, video recorders, routers and management PG | 2
software.

The key elements of a remote surveillance system often include:

1. Cameras: These capture video footage of the monitored area. They

can be wired or wireless and may have features like night vision, motion
detection, and pan/tilt/zoom capabilities.
2. Video Recorders: These, with the aid of an OEM’s embedded software
manage the video feeds, often with features like live viewing, storage, etc.
3. Connectivity: The system uses JAMB’s recommended routers through a secure
Port Forwarding to transmit the collected data from NVR/DVR to all designated
remote centers for footage viewing, analysis and reporting.
4. Software: This provides seamless access and management of each
remote location from a common console to provide real-time monitoring and the
ability to respond quickly to incidents, regardless of distance.

However, to ensure seamless and safe delivery of video contents, there is need to
configure each router and video recorder for end-to-end synchronization. This
guide therefore, provides the basic requirements and step-by-step information on
how to set up port forwarding on Centre’s MTN, Airtel, Huawei, or Mobily 3G/4G
routers in order to allow access to the Hikvision or Dahua NVR/DVR system.

The required ports for the NVR/DVR are:

 HTTP Port: 8000

 RTSP Port: 554
 Local IP Address of NVR/DVR: 192.168.1.4

Key Requirements:

1. A recommended working 3G/4G router (MTN, Airtel, Huawei or Mobily)

2. A recommended active DVR/NVR (e.g. Hikvison, Dahua)
3. Access to the router's admin interface
4. Ensure you have an admin privilege for the NVR or DVR
5. The local IP address of your NVR/DVR device (in this case: 192.168.1.4)
6. Your NVR/DVR ports to be forwarded (HTTP: 8000, RTSP: 554)
7. Personnel with good knowledge of networking and surveillance system

DVR / NVR
To set up a Hikvision or Dahua DVR/NVR with HTTP port set to 8000, RTSP port
set to 554, and an IP address of 192.168.1.4, follow the steps below. This guide
assumes that 192.168.1.4 is your external IP address or router's public-facing IP
address, and you'll need to configure port forwarding on your router to make the
DVR/NVR accessible remotely.
PG | 16

Here’s a step-by-step guide for both Hikvision and Dahua DVR/NVR systems:

Hikvision DVR/NVR Setup

1. Assign Static IP to DVR/NVR

 Internal IP (Static): 192.168.1.4 (Set this IP address in your internal

network).
 Login to your Hikvision DVR/NVR:
o Open a browser and type http://<DVR/NVR IP> (e.g.,
http://192.168.1.4).

o Enter your admin username and password to log in.

 Configure the IP address:

o Go to the Configuration menu.

o Select Network > TCP/IP. PG | 17
o Set the IP address to 192.168.1.4 (ensure this is within the same
subnet as your local network).
o Set Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0 and Gateway to the router's
IP
address (e.g., 192.168.1.1).
o Click Save.
PG | 18

2. Set HTTP Port to 8000

 Go to Configuration → Network → Advanced Settings → Port Settings.

 Set the HTTP Port to 8000.
 Click Save to apply the change.
3. Set RTSP Port to 554

 In the Port Settings section, find the RTSP Port setting.

 Set the RTSP Port to 554.
 Click Save to apply the change.
PG | 19
Step 4: Test Configurations

Once the port forwarding settings are applied, you can test whether they are
working correctly:

1. Internal Testing: From your local network, open a browser and try accessing
the device using the local IP address (e.g., http://192.168.1.4:8000 for
HTTP).

 HTTP Access: In a browser, test http://192.168.1.4:8000 to ensure the

HTTP port is properly set up.
 RTSP Access: Open VLC and try to connect to rtsp://192.168.1.4:554
to test the RTSP stream.

If everything is working locally, you can now access the device remotely using
the external IP address (which is 192.168.1.4) from any device connected to
the internet, provided that port forwarding is configured correctly.

2. External Testing: You can use an external network (e.g., mobile data or a
different Wi-Fi network) and check if you can access the NVR/DVR remotely
via the public IP address and the respective port (e. g., http://your-wan-
ip:8000 for HTTP and rtsp://your-wan-ip:554 for RTSP).

3. Firewall and Security Settings: Ensure that your firewall (if applicable)
allows the specified ports (8000, 554) to pass through. It may also be
necessary to adjust the NVR/DVR settings to allow remote access on these
ports.

Troubleshooting

4. Port Not Opening: If the ports are not opening, double-check the port
forwarding configuration and ensure the router's firewall isn’t blocking the
ports.
2. Unable to Connect Remotely: If you're unable to connect remotely, confirm
that the public IP address is correct and that you are using the correct ports
(8000 and 554).
3. Device Inaccessible: If the NVR/DVR is not accessible locally, make sure
the internal IP address (192.168.1.4) is correctly assigned to the device, and
there are no IP conflicts on your local network. PG | 20

Conclusion

By following the above steps, you should be able to successfully configure port
forwarding for your Hikvision or Dahua NVR/DVR on an MTN, Airtel, or Mobily
3G/4G router. This allows you to access your system remotely from any location
via the specified ports (HTTP: 8000, RTSP: 554).
