OBJECTIVES:

 Describe how sensors, microprocessors and actuators can

be used in collaboration to create automated systems

 Describe the advantages and disadvantages of an

automated system used for a given scenario
OVERVIEW OF AUTOMATED SYSTEM
 Definition:
An automated system is a setup that can perform tasks or
processes without requiring constant human intervention.

It depends upon Sensors, Microprocessor and Actuators.

 Why we need Automated Systems in our daily

life?
HOW SENSORS ARE USED IN
AUTOMATED SYSTEMS?
• Sensors are devices that detect and respond to changes in their
environment.

• They gather data by measuring physical properties such as

temperature, pressure, light, or motion.

• In automated systems, sensors are used to collect information

from the system's surroundings and provide input to the control
system.

• If the data is analogue it will be converted into digital format by

analogue-digital convertor (ADC)
HOW MICROPROCESSORS ARE USED IN
AUTOMATED SYSTEMS?
• Microprocessors are small electronic chips that act as the
brain of a computer or automated system.

• They process and manipulate data according to instructions

stored in their memory.

• In automated systems, microprocessors interpret the data

from sensors, make decisions based on programmed
algorithms, and send commands to actuators to perform
specific actions.
HOW ACTUATORS ARE USED IN
AUTOMATED SYSTEMS?
• Actuators are devices that convert electrical signals or commands
from a control system into physical action.

• They are responsible for carrying out tasks or operations in

response to instructions received from the microprocessor.

• Examples of actuators include motors, solenoids, Wheels, and so

on.

• In automated systems, actuators execute actions such as moving

components, adjusting settings, or controlling outputs based on
the system's requirements.

COLLABORATION OF
COMPONENTS
Data Collection by Sensors:

 Sensors detect and measure physical properties or conditions

in the system's environment.

 They convert these measurements into electrical signals or

digital data that can be processed by the microprocessor.

 Examples of sensor data include temperature readings,

motion detection, light intensity, or pressure levels.
COLLABORATION OF
COMPONENTS
Processing of Data by Microprocessors:

 Microprocessors receive input data from sensors and analyze it

using programmed algorithms or instructions.

 They make decisions based on the analyzed data, determining

the appropriate actions or responses required by the system.

 Microprocessors may compare sensor data to predefined

thresholds, perform calculations, or implement logical
operations to determine the next course of action.
COLLABORATION OF
COMPONENTS
Execution of Actions by Actuators:

 Based on the decisions made by the microprocessor, actuators

receive commands or signals to perform specific actions.

 Actuators convert electrical signals or commands into physical

motion, adjustments, or changes within the system.

 They carry out tasks such as moving components, adjusting

settings, controlling outputs, or triggering responses based on
the requirements of the automated system.
COLLABORATION OF
COMPONENTS
Feedback Loop:

 In some automated systems, there is a feedback loop where

sensors continuously monitor the system's outputs or
performance.

 The feedback data is sent back to the microprocessor for

analysis and adjustment of the system's operations as needed.

 This feedback loop helps maintain the system's stability,

efficiency, and accuracy over time.
ADVANTAGES OF AUTOMATED
SYSTEM

 Increased efficiency and accuracy.

 Reduction in manual labor.

 Enhanced learning opportunities.

 Real-time feedback and monitoring.

DISADVANTAGES OF
AUTOMATED SYSTEM

 Initial setup costs.

 Dependency on technology.

 Potential for technical issues.

 Lack of personalized learning experience.
