1.3.

2 describe the function of manual data entry devices and their

uses in daily life, i.e. keyboard, scanners (2D and 3D), microphone,
pointing devices (graphics tablet, joystick, light pen, mouse,
touchpad, trackball), digital camera, interactive whiteboard and touch
screens (capacitive, resistive and infrared);
Keyboards

• Commonly used input device to enter data and instructions

into the computer.
• They are used as the input device on computers, tablets,
mobile phones and many other electronic items.
• When a key on the keyboard is pressed, a predefined
value(code) in the form of electrical signal is sent to the
computer to tell it which key is pressed.
• Standard keyboard is also called “QWERTY” ,which describes
the beginning keys in top row of alphabetic letters.
• A keyboard has above 100 key on it.
Graphics tablets

• A pointing device .
• A graphics tablet, also known as a drawing tablet or digitizer,
• used by artists, designers, and other creative professionals to
create digital artwork.
• It consists of a flat, pressure-sensitive surface that allows
users to draw directly on the tablet using a stylus
• Graphics tablets are designed to mimic the experience of
drawing or writing on paper. When the stylus is pressed
against the tablet's surface, it detects the pressure and
position of the pen, translating it into digital data. This data is
then sent to a connected computer, where it is displayed on
the screen in real-time, allowing the artist to see their artwork
taking shape.
• Graphics tablets require a computer or compatible device to
function. The tablet is connected to the computer via USB or
wirelessly, and specialized drivers are often installed to
ensure proper communication between the tablet and the
software being used for drawing or design.
Joystick

It is made of base and a stick. By gripping the stick, a pointer

on the screen can be controlled. Buttons are used to make
selections.
• Used in video/computer games.
Light pens

• Light pens are used with computers as an input device. They contain sensors
that send signals to a computer whenever light changes are detected. The
devices only work with CRT monitors .
• The light pen contains photocell at its tip. When the pen is placed on the
screen, the photocell detects the light emitted by the CRT and sends the
coordinates to the computer for processing
• It is used to point to an object or draw on the screen.
• It gives more accuracy than pointing with our fingers on the touch screen.
• It is mainly used in engineering for designing purposes.
Pointing Device

• Pointing Device are used to control the movement of the

pointer(cursor) to select items on a screen or open computer
programs or files.
• Commonly used pointing device are graphics tablet, joystick,
light pen, mouse, touchpad, trackball.
Mouse

• The mouse is an example of a pointing device. The user

controls the position of a pointer on the screen by moving the
mouse around. There are usually two buttons which have
different functions; the left button is used to select items by
double clicking, while the right button brings up drop-down
menus. Many also have a scroll button, which speeds up the
process of moving through a document.
Trackball

• Trackballs are similar to a mouse, except that a ball is on the top .the
user controls the pointer on the screen by rotating the ball with their
hand.
• It is designed to be rolled by the user's thumb, fingers, or palm to
move a cursor on a computer screen. Unlike a mouse, the user does
not move the device itself but rather rolls the ball to generate input.
Trackball remains stationary on the surface.
• It has buttons that are used to perform operations similar to those
performed by a mouse.
Touchpad

• Touchpads are used as a pointing device in many laptop

computers. The pointer is controlled by the user moving their
finger on the touchpad .
• They also have buttons under the touchpad which serve the
same function as the left and right buttons on a mouse.
• Touchpad is integrated into the laptop computer there is no
need for a separate mouse.
Digital cameras

It captures pictures and store them in digital form.

• The images are stored on a memory card and can be transferred to a computer by:
• » directly reading the memory card (by slotting it into a card reader attached to a computer
• » connecting the camera to the computer using a USB port
• » using wireless data transfer (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth).
• The images are uploaded from the camera and stored in a file in the computer; the user
can select which photos to upload and which to discard. The images are then available for
printing out as photos, can be used in a ‘slide show’, imported into software such as a word
processor, or uploaded on to the internet.
• Digital camera have a LCD for viewing images.
• It is also possible to run software on the whiteboard and users can
interact by simply using their fingers on the whiteboard surface.
• This allows the user to demonstrate all of the features of the
software to group of people. .
• Any application that runs on a computer can be used on an
interactive whiteboard.
• The whole audience can see what is happening and even become
actively involved in the demonstration.
Interactive whiteboards
• Interactive whiteboards are devices that allow computer images
to be displayed on a whiteboard using a digital projector.
• They also allow a user to write on the whiteboard and the text or
drawings produced are then stored in an electronic form for later
use.
• Basically the information which is hand-drawn or hand-written
can be stored . Suppose the image of block diagram of computer
system has been projected on the whiteboard from a computer-
stored file. It is possible for this image to add labels, a
description or even changes to the design for later use.
• The labeled diagram can then be saved in an electronic form to
allow these changes to be made.
