Module3-Operation-On-Function

Module 3 covers operations on functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The document defines how to perform these operations and provides examples for adding and subtracting functions. It emphasizes that division results in another function only if the divisor is not the zero function.

MODULE 3:

OPERATIONS ON
FUNCTION
Learning Competency:

• Performs addition,
subtraction, multiplication,
and division, of functions.
Adding, Subtracting and Multiplying
two or more functions will result in
another function. Dividing two
functions together will also result in
another function if the denominator
or divisor is not the zero function.
Definition:

Let f and g be functions.

a. Their sum, denoted by f + g , is the
function defined by (f + g )(x ) = f(x) + g(x).

b. Their difference, denoted by f - g, is the

function defined by (f - g)(x) = f(x) - g(x).
c. Their product, denoted by f - g, is the
function defined by (f x g)(x) = f(x) x g(x).

d. Their quotient, denoted by f/g, is the

function defined by (f/g) (x) = (f(x)/g(x),
where g(x)≠0.
Addition and Subtraction

Example 1:

If f(x) = 6 - +8x – 1 find

1. (f + g)(x)

2. (f - g)(x)
Solution:
1. Find (f + g)(x)
Step 1: Apply the definition for adding
functions.

(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

(f + g) (x) = ( 6 - 12x – 19) + ( -

Step 2: Group similar terms and make sure that
the terms are arranged in descending order

(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

(f + g)(x) = (6- 12x -19) + ( - + 8x -1)

(f + g(x) = + 6 - - 12x + 8x – 19 -1
Step 3: Combine similar terms

(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

(f + g)(x) = (6- 12x -19) + ( - + 8x -1)

(f + g)(x) = + 6 - - 12x + 8x – 19 -1

Answer ---(f + g)(x) = + 5 - 4x - 20

.
2. Find (f - g)(x)
Step 1: Apply the formula for subtracting
functions

(f – g)(x) = f(x) - g(x)

(f – g)(x) = (6- 12x -19) - ( - + 8x -1)

Step 2: Change the sign of the subtrahend then
proceed to addition

(f – g)(x) = f(x) - g(x)

(f – g)(x) = (6- 12x -19) - ( - + 8x -1)

(f – g)(x) = 6- 12x -19 - + - 8x +1

Step 3: Group similar terms and make sure that the
terms are arranged in descending order.

(f – g)(x) = f(x) - g(x)

(f – g)(x) = (6- 12x -19) - ( - + 8x -1)

(f – g)(x) = 6- 12x -19 – + - 8x +1

(f – g)(x) = + - 12x - 8x – 19 + 1
Step 4: Combine similar terms.
(f – g)(x) = f(x) - g(x)

(f – g)(x) = (6- 12x -19) - ( - + 8x -1)

(f – g)(x) = 6- 12x -19 – + - 8x +1

(f – g)(x) = + - 12x - 8x – 19 + 1

( f – g)(x) = + 7 - 20x – 18 ---- Answer
