Technology Today

Health IT infrastructure
• IT infrastructure is the components required to operate
and manage enterprise IT environments. IT infrastructure
can be deployed within a cloud computing system, or an
organization's facilities.
• These components include hardware, software,
networking components, an operating system (OS),
and data storage
• Hardware
• Hardware includes servers, data centers,
personal computers, routers, switches, and
other equipment.
Health IT infrastructure
• Software
• Software refers to the applications used by the business, such
as web servers, content management systems, and the OS—
like Linux®. The OS is responsible for managing system
resources and hardware and makes the connections between all
of your software and the physical resources that do the work.
• Networking
• Interconnected network components enable network
operations, management, and communication between internal
and external systems. The network consists of internet
connectivity, network enablement, firewalls, and security, as
well as hardware like routers, switches, and cables.
Healthcare systems
How do healthcare organizations
use IT infrastructure?
• The most common uses of IT infrastructure in healthcare are:
• Electronic health records (EHRs): They can track patient
care, schedule appointments, and exchange information with
other healthcare providers.
• Practice management systems: They can track patient
billing and payments, and manage staff schedules.
• Clinical decision support systems: They can be used to
provide guidance on diagnosis and treatment, offer drug and
laboratory test recommendations, and alert providers to
potential problems.
• Telemedicine: is the use of telecommunications technology to
provide medical care at a distance. It can consult with
specialists, provide remote patient monitoring, and conduct
distance learning.
How do healthcare organizations
use IT infrastructure?
• Health information exchange (HIE); improves patient care by
providing access to a wider range of health information.
• Personal health records (PHRs): used to track and manage health
information, schedule appointments, and communicate with
healthcare providers.
• Population health management (PHM); used to track and
manage population health data, identify health risks, and develop
and implement population health interventions.
• mHealth: the use of mobile technology to improve health. mHealth
applications can track and manage health information, provide
educational information, and support disease management.
• Health analytics: used to identify trends and patterns in health
data, understand the impact of interventions, and predict future
health needs.
HIT Today
• EHRs still need Improvements
• The primary complaint by physicians is that poorly designed EHR
interfaces are confusing and more time-consuming than paper.
• Cloud adoption
• Healthcare organizations are shifting from data centers to cloud-
based computing.
• The goal is to lower the cost of data storage and enhance the
ability to share healthcare data within departments and among
other entities.
• Internet of Things (IoT) healthcare devices
• Real-time data availability and information sharing.
• But IoT devices are targeted by hackers and the technology still has
some maturing to do.
Healthcare Information
Technology Today (2)
• Accessing unstructured data
• Healthcare organizations have been turning to platforms that enable
access to unstructured data too.
• Automating healthcare administration
• Major administrative functions of healthcare — such as hospital
billing, financial applications, and physician billing — have been
automated.
• Technology-driven innovation
• Reduce medical errors
• Computerized physician data entry (CPDE)
• Disease management.,
Next Lecture
• Healthcare data and information resources.
• Health information management (concepts and definitions).
• Types of Data.
• Data presentation.
• Data processing Systems.
