History of
transportation
The history of transportation began with humans carrying goods on their backs and
heads, and later with the use of pack animals. Here are some milestones in the
history of transportation:
3500 BC: The first wheeled vehicles were invented and used for transporting small
loads.
2000 BC: The first chariots were built.
312 BC: The Romans built paved roads.
1662: The first horse-drawn public bus was invented.
1783: The first hot air balloon was launched.
1801: The first steam "road locomotive" was run.
1814: George Stephenson built the first steam-powered railway train.
1904: The Wright Brothers flew the first motor-driven aeroplane.
1957: Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite, was launched into orbit.

LAND TRANSPORTS
Public land transport refers to the carriage of people and goods by government or
commercial entities which is made available to the public at large for the purpose of
facilitating the economy and society they serve. Most transport infrastructure and large
transport vehicles are operated in this manner.
• Commercial land transport refers to the carriage of people and goods by commercial
entities made available at cost to individuals, businesses, and the government for the
purpose of profiting the entities providing the travel.
• Military land transport refers to the carriage of people and goods by the military or
other operators for the purpose of supporting military operations, both in peacetime as
well as in combat areas.
• Freight transport, or shipping, is a key in the value chain in manufacturing. With
increased specialization and globalization, production is being located further away
from consumption, rapidly increasing the demand for transport.
AIR TRANSPORTS
Air transportation is the movement of people and goods by air using aircraft like airplanes,
helicopters, and private jets. It's a fast way to travel that connects different locations and
allows people to cross international borders. Air transportation is important for economic
growth and development, as it helps generate trade, promote tourism, and create jobs.
• Commercial purposes: In comparison to slower forms of transit such as road, rail, and
sea, commercial jets are the most popular kind of air travel. Moreover, they’re the
costliest. According to the size and number of passengers, planes are split into two or
four types. For domestic flights, first-class (the costliest) and economy class are the
most prevalent arrangements. On domestic flights, you may only choose from one of
four service levels: economy, business, first, or business class.
• Helicopters: Another fast kind of air transportation is the helicopter, which transports
passengers aloft. There is a significant difference in passenger capacity between
helicopters and commercial flights, with certain commercial jets having the ability to
carry hundreds of people at once.
• Rocket: These include missiles, spacecraft, aero planes, and other vehicles with a rocket
engine that are referred to as “rockets”. At least since the 13th century, small-scale
military and recreational usage of rockets have been documented. When utilized in
space, rockets are much more common than they are on Earth’s surface because their
engines propel them ahead by firing their exhaust in the opposite direction of travel at
a high rate of speed .
• Parachute: A person, parcel, or heavy item may be gently dropped from the air thanks
to the air-filled fabric canopy, which is released from the aircraft’s back before landing.
The military created parachuting technology to rescue passengers in balloons and aero
planes in the case of an emergency. Later, it was used to parachute men into war zones.
Parachute jumping is a popular sport and leisure activity across the world right now,
with a large number of people taking part in both.
WATER TRANSPORTS
Water transport is movement by means of a watercraft—such as a barge, boat, ship,
or sailboat—over a body of water, such as a sea, ocean, lake, canal, or river. The need for
buoyancy is common to watercraft, making the hull a dominant aspect of its construction,
maintenance, and appearance.
• In the 19th century, the first steam ships were developed, using a steam engine to drive
a paddle wheel or propeller to move the ship. The steam was produced in a boiler using
wood or coal and fed through a steam external combustion engine.
• Now most ships have an internal combustion engine using a slightly refined type
of petroleum called bunker fuel.
• Some ships, such as submarines, use nuclear power to produce the steam.
• Recreational or educational craft still use wind power, while some smaller craft
use internal combustion engines to drive one or more propellers or, in the case of jet
boats, an inboard water jet. In shallow draft areas, hovercraft are propelled by large
pusher-prop fans. (See Marine propulsion.)
