1.Problem Statement
 Traditional dustbins require manual opening, leading to
hygiene concerns.
 Lack of proper waste management contributes to
environmental pollution.
 Need for an automated solution to enhance hygiene and
efficiency.

3
3. Objectives
 Develop an automated dustbin that opens its lid upon
detecting motion.
 Implement an ultrasonic sensor to detect hand
proximity.
 Integrate Arduino for efficient control and processing.
 Enhance hygiene by reducing human contact with the
bin.

5. Software Hardware Requirements
Software Requirements: Hardware Requirements:
● Arduino Ide ● Arduino Uno
● Ultrasonic Sensors
● Servo Motor
● Dustbin
● Jumper Wire
● Switching Adapter

Servo Moter:-

Servo motors are small in size, and

because they have built-in circuitry
to control their movement, they
can be connected directly to an
Arduino.

5.Components
Ultrasonic Sensor->
Ultrasonic distance sensors use pulses of
ultrasonic sound to detect the distance
between them and nearby solid objects. The
sensors consist of two main components:
 An Ultrasonic Transmitter – This transmits
the ultrasonic sound pulses, it operates at 40
KHz
 The HC-SR04 has the following four
 An Ultrasonic Receiver – The receiver
connections:
listens for the transmitted pulses. If it
receives them it produces an output pulse  VCC – This is the 5 Volt positive
whose width can be used to determine the power supply.
distance the pulse travelled.
 Trig - Trigger Pin (Input)
 Echo – Echo Pin (Output)
 GND – Ground 9

• Suppose if the ultrasonic sensor detects a
hand or a leg of a human being or any
other object placed nearby, then Arduino
will measure the distances, if the distance
is less than the predefined value then the
Motor will be activated and Arduino servo
motor will start and hence the head of the
dustbin will be opened which is attached
with the servo motor.
•After a few seconds, it will automatically
close.
• Because the predefined value is given, it
can easily be changed.
15
7. Results
 Successfully opens and closes the lid upon hand detection.
 Enhances hygiene by minimizing human contact.
 Efficient response time of the ultrasonic sensor.

8. Challenges Faced
 Calibration of the ultrasonic sensor for precise detection.
 Power management for optimal energy usage.
 Ensuring smooth lid movement with the servo motor.
 Sensor Calibration: Fine-tuning the ultrasonic sensor to detect
objects accurately.
 Power Management: Optimizing power consumption for
prolonged operation.
 Environmental Factors: Dust and moisture affecting sensor
performance.
 Cost Efficiency: Balancing features while keeping the project
affordable.

9. Conclusion
 The Smart Dustbin using Arduino automates waste disposal
efficiently.
 It minimizes human contact, promoting hygiene and sanitation.
 The ultrasonic sensor detects motion accurately within a
defined range.
 A servo motor ensures smooth and reliable lid operation.
 The system operates with minimal power consumption, making
it energy efficient.
 Implementation is cost-effective and suitable for public and
household use.
 It helps reduce contamination and encourages proper waste
disposal
