Stage 9 - Check Point - Sound and Waves

The document explains the fundamentals of sound waves, including their production, transmission, and characteristics such as amplitude and frequency. It highlights the relationship between amplitude and loudness, as well as frequency and pitch. Additionally, it discusses the phenomenon of interference when sound waves meet and provides activities for understanding wave properties.

A brief of the sound
● Sound waves are produced by vibrating
sources
● A medium is needed to transmit sound
waves. This means if there are no
molecules, such as in a vacuum, then the
sound can’t travel through it
● When a sound wave comes into contact
with a solid, the wave vibrations are
transferred to the solid
Sound waves
• The crest or peak is the highest
point on a wave above the
equilibrium, or rest position
• Amplitude
The through is the lowest point
on a wave below the equilibrium, or
rest, position
• Amplitude is defined as the
distance from the undisturbed
Wavelength
position to the peak or trough
of a wave

Table of contents
• Changes in amplitude and frequency affect the loudness and pitch of sound waves
• The frequency of a sound wave is related to its pitch:
Sounds with a high pitch have a high frequency (or short wavelength)
Sounds with a low pitch have a low frequency (or long wavelength)
• The amplitude of a sound wave is related to its volume
Sounds with a large amplitude have a high volume
Sounds with a small amplitude have a low volume
Interference of the sound
The effect that is produced when the waves meet each other is called interference
Waves reinforce means to make stronger
Waves will cancel when they meet with the peaks and troughs together
Activity 6
Based on the descriptions below draw the corresponding wave with the curve tool

Quiet sound, high pitch Loud sound, low pitch

Activity 1
Complete the wave with the name of every part of it in the respective boxes

Crest

Here you have the name of every part:

Crest, Amplitude, Trough, Resting point, Wavelength
Activity 2
Join with arrows the correct description of the waves with the corresponding
graph

Quiet sound, low pitch

Loud sound, low pitch

Loud sound, high pitch
