Introduction
Fire alarm detection systems are crucial for safety,
providing early warnings for fire or smoke hazards by
detecting environmental changes such as heat,
smoke, or flames. Modern systems utilize advanced
technologies, including microcontrollers and sensors,
to enhance detection accuracy. This project focuses
on creating a cost-effective fire detection system
using an Arduino microcontroller paired with an MQ2
smoke sensor.

Brief of
Components
Arduino Uno
The Arduino UNO is a microcontroller
board based on the ATmega328P. It has
14 digital input/output pins, 6 analog
inputs, a 16 MHz quartz crystal, a USB
connection, a power jack, an ICSP
header, and a reset button. It is the most
popular and widely used board among
the Arduino boards.

The Arduino UNO can be programmed

using the Arduino programming
language, which is based on C++. It uses
a simple and intuitive programming
environment, making it easy for
beginners to get started with
microcontroller programming.
MQ 2 Smoke Sensor
The MQ-2 gas sensor is used to detect a variety
of gases, including:

Alcohol, Carbon monoxide, Hydrogen, Liquefied

petroleum gas (LPG), Methane, Propane, and
Smoke.

MQ2 Gas Sensor Tutorial: Measuring Gas

Concentration with ...

The MQ-2 gas sensor is often used for gas

leakage detection in homes and industries. It's
popular with beginners because it's easy to use
and inexpensive.

System Operation
Monitoring
The system operates by constantly monitoring air
quality using the MQ2 smoke sensor. The sensor
continuously checks the surrounding air for any
presence of smoke or flammable gases.
Detection Process
Smoke Detection: When the sensor detects smoke or dangerous gas
levels, it immediately sends a signal to the Arduino.
LED Indications:

● Green LED: Initially, the green LED is lit to indicate a safe

environment.
● Red LED: Once smoke is detected, the green LED switches off,
and the red LED lights up to indicate danger.
Buzzer Activation: Simultaneously, the Arduino triggers
the buzzer, producing an audible alert to notify anyone
nearby of the smoke hazard.
Display Notification: The system also updates the I2C
display module to show the message 'Smoke Detected',
providing a clear, visual indication of the hazard.
Returning to Safe Mode: If the smoke level decreases
below a defined threshold, the system returns to its default
safe state. The red LED turns off, the green LED lights back
up, the buzzer deactivates, and the display shows 'Safe'
again.

Applications
Residential Fire Safety: This system can be deployed in
homes to provide early warnings in case of fire.

Commercial Buildings: In offices or stores, the system

ensures fire hazards are detected early, avoiding
potential damage.

Other Areas: Schools, warehouses, and residential

buildings.
