History

Eating habits in England have evolved greatly in recent decades, influenced

by factors such as globalization, health awareness and technological
advances. These changes have had a profound impact on restaurant
franchises, prompting them to adapt their menus, operations and
marketing strategies to meet new consumer demands.
Traditional British cuisine

Traditionally, British cuisine was characterized by hearty but simple dishes made with
locally sourced ingredients. Staples such as roast beef, fish and chips and shepherd's pie
were common. Meals were usually hearty and rich, reflecting the agricultural roots and
cold climate of the region. Breakfasts were hearty, with items such as bacon, eggs,
sausages and black pudding, while dinners were the main meal of the day.
Post-warchanges
The postwar period brought significant changes in British eating habits. With
increased prosperity and the advent of mass transportation, people had greater
access to a variety of foods. The influence of American culture introduced fast
food, while European and Asian cuisines began to gain popularity. Convenience
became a priority, leading to the rise of ready meals and packaged foods. These
changes laid the foundation for a more diverse and dynamic food landscape.
Cultural influences

Immigration has played a crucial role in shaping modern British cuisine. Waves of
immigrants from India, Pakistan, the Caribbean and other regions brought their
culinary traditions with them, enriching the British culinary landscape with a wide
variety of flavors and dishes. Curry, for example, has become so integrated into
British culture that it is now considered a national dish. This cultural exchange has
resulted in a more eclectic and inclusive food culture.

Health and wellness

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the nutritional content of foods and are opting for healthier
choices. This trend is driven by the desire to prevent lifestyle-related diseases and maintain overall wellness.
The growth of specific dietary preferences, such as vegetarianism, veganism and gluten-free diets, has
significantly influenced eating habits. More and more people are adopting these diets for health, ethical or
environmental reasons.
Convenience and fast food
Many people manage to balance demanding work schedules with personal commitments, leaving them little
time to enjoy traditional, leisurely meals. This lifestyle change has fueled the growth of fast food and express
service restaurants, which offer quick solutions for eating on the go.
Fast food restaurants offer the agility and efficiency of fast food with the quality and ambiance of casual
dining. These establishments typically focus on fresh ingredients and customizable meals, and cater to both
health-conscious and time-pressed customers.
Technological influence

Technological advances have revolutionized the way food is ordered and

consumed. The rise of home food delivery apps and online ordering
systems has made it easier than ever for consumers to enjoy restaurant
meals from the comfort of their homes. This trend has been accelerated
by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a surge in demand for delivery
and takeout services.

Sustainable and ethical food

Growing awareness of environmental issues has led to an increased
preference for sustainable and ethically sourced food. Consumers are
more aware of the impact of their food choices on the planet, and favor
restaurants that prioritize environmentally friendly practices. This
includes using locally sourced ingredients, reducing food waste and
minimizing the use of plastic.
American cuisine is a blend of many cultures and influences, and its love of fast food and
street food is well known. Here are some of this country's favorite dishes:

Barbecue. As soon as summer arrives, Americans rush to get out their barbecues. They love parties
where family and friends gather in a neighbor's backyard to cook.

Hot dogs. Hot dogs with all kinds of sauces and condiments are the quintessential American street
food.

Fried chicken. Typical of the South, it is one of the favorite homemade dishes of Americans. The
contrast between the crunchy crust and the juicy interior is the charm of this dish.

Cole slaw. This salad is a good accompaniment to many typical American dishes. It consists of a
mixture of thinly sliced cabbage and carrots with a dressing of mayonnaise, vinegar, lemon juice and
garlic.

Cherry pie. And finally, one of the most traditional desserts in the U.S.A. It is very common to serve
it during the Fourth of July holidays, since cherries are in season.
At school we have always been taught that the eating habits of the
English, as well as the traditions of the United Kingdom, are different
from ours.

The eating habits of the English include full and robust complementary in the morning; lunch
fasting at noon; tea time mid-afternoon, followed by a frugal and not late dinner. It is a basic
scheme that, to be honest, suffers from the influences of globalization and the strong foreign
presence in Britain.

Breakfast

Be that as it may, in a traditional English family, in the morning “breakfast is

breakfast”: along with tea and other hot drinks there are cornflakes (cereal flakes
to be enjoyed with milk), toast with orange marmalade and curls of butter,
porridge (a porridge of barley and oats), scrambled eggs with bacon (smoked
bacon) and the inevitable sausages (sausages). In some areas (especially in the
countryside, in tourist areas or in seaside resorts...), the most robust stomachs do
not disdain even split and smoked herring (pattern) and a Finnish haddock
delicacy , smoked cod.
The English lunch: lunch

Lunch is usually taken around 13 hours, and is conceived as a fasting break, simple and quick, often
based on sandwiches or sandwiches (sandwiches) with ham or roast beef, slices of pizza as essential
Pizza Hut or salads. In larger cities, with generous green spaces, such as London, United States In
addition, in good weather, consume lunch in the park, making the break more pleasant.

Tea time
The real institution is the tea time, every afternoon, between 16.30 and 17 hours, when the ritual of
the English tea is prepared around steaming teapots, accompanied by small cakes and mini scones,
called scones.

Dinner: supper

Dinner, on the other hand, is eaten around 7 p.m. Dinner, dinner , dinner, which, in good quality
restaurants, is usually very well cared for, both in the arrangement of the table and in the dishes. You
can start with white vermouth or sherry as an aperitif; it continues with an appetizer of shrimp,
salmon, smoked trout; to main course , the main course, based on meat (eg. Scottish beef tenderloin,
grilled beef, smoked ham, lamb or pork chops, with boiled potatoes and traditional spicy sauces ...; leg,
loin of veal or roast veal). Typically English is also steak and kidney pie, beef stew with kidneys
wrapped in puff pastry. Dessert may be based on sweets or cheese.
English cheeses, fruit and dessert.

There is no shortage of typically English cheeses, ranging from hard Cheddar to

mild (both sweet and sharp) Cheshire to the spreadable, but very sharp, Stilton The
most common desserts are apple pie (apple pie), trifle (trifle) and hot pudding
(steamedpudding). Always in the restaurants fruit is served mainly in the form of
fruit salad and ice cream is never missing. Wine is imported (from France, Spain,
Germany, Italy, California, Australia) and therefore much more expensive than beer
and other drinks. With a good glass of red wine, e.g. Port, you can also finish with a
dinner. Finally, a word about English beer, which is undoubtedly good and cheap. It
stands out in brown or mild, dark; stout , tall, light or pale, light and mild and bitter,
half dark and half bitter. The national spirits are whiskey (produced in Scotland)
and gin. In restaurants it is customary to tip the waiter.
Apart from the most typical dishes of English cuisine, it should be noted that the
English have been internationalizing their dishes for several centuries. So it is frequent,
from time to time, the introduction not only of European specialties (French, Italian ...)
but from the rest of the world (Chinese, Indian, American ...), which provides a variety
and exoticism really attractive to the gastronomic culture of the United Kingdom. As in
Spain, each region or area of the United Kingdom has its own specialties and customs,
although some dishes are very popular throughout the country.
