Managing and

Caring for the Self:

A better Me and My
future goals
UNDERSTANDING THE SELF (GEC 101)
At the end of the lesson, students should be
able to:

Determine your short-term and long-

term goals;
Recognize the importance of goal
setting; and
Apply the ways on how to achieve
your goals.
The Importance of Setting Goals

We all seek success, and we

know that nothing ever comes
easy. In order to achieve the
success, we spend our lives
chasing, we first need to
define our goals.
How to set a goal

 Setting a goal is something you need to

practice in order to get it right.
 It takes time to understand exactly how to
set a clear goal that is possible to
accomplish.
 Goal setting is a process that will help you
motivate yourself, and the more detailed and
precise the goal is, the better your brain will
analyze the steps in order to achieve it.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's
hierarchy of needs is a theory of psychology explaining
human motivation based on pursuit of different levels of needs.
 The theory states that humans are motivated to fulfill their needs in
hierarchical order.
Thisorder begins with most basic needs before moving on more
advanced needs.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied

before individuals can attend to needs higher up.
 From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the
needs are: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-
actualization.
 The ultimate goal, according to this theory, is to reach the fifth level
of the hierarchy: self-actualization.
Locke’s Goal Setting Theory

In 1960, Edwin Locke put forward the Goal-setting theory of

motivation. This theory states that goal setting is essentially
linked to task performance. It states that specific and
challenging goals along with appropriate feedback contribute
to higher and better task performance.
Clarity – a goal must be specific and clear.

Challenge- One of the most important characteristics of

goals is the level of challenge, people often motivated by
Locke’s achievement.

Goal Commitment- Goals must be understood and agreed

upon if they are to be effective.
Setting
Theory Feedback- provide a regular feedback throughout the
whole process. This helps to keep the goal on track.

Task Complexity- This about realistic timescales. For

goals or assignments that are highly complex, take
special care to ensure that the work doesn't become too
overwhelming
 Higher level of self-efficacy influences our
motivation to give it a try and take that
action, and even to persevere when
challenges are encountered. That is the
Albert power of self efficacy-the fuel that drives
change. And that is why it matters to all of
Bandura’s us. So, how do we build self efficacy? How
do we empower ourselves and others? To
Self-Efficacy believe in our ability to do a certain thing.
Albert Bandura, a psychologist who develop
the theory, Identified the 4 sources or ways
on how to build self-efficacy.
4 WAYS TO BUILD SELF-EFFICACY

EXPERIENCE SUCCESS -Is experiencing the

results of self-efficacy first hand. The key to
mastery is approaching life with dedicated
efforts and experimenting with realistic but
challenging goals
Albert
SEE OTHERS SUCCEED-This means choosing role-
models that can demonstrate their self-efficacy.
Observing those who employ this in their lives
Bandura’s
Self Efficacy
and have reached their goals despite adversity
can provide great motivation.

RECEIVE ENCOURAGEMENT- This is about ‘finding

the right mentor’.

MANAGE NEGATIVE EMOTIONS - Our emotions,

moods, and physical state can influence our
interpretation of self-efficacy.
Carol Dweck’s Fixed vs.

Growth Mindset Theory

Carol Dweck studies human motivation. She spends

her days diving into why people succeed (or don’t) and
what’s within our control to foster success. Her theory
of the two mind sets and the difference they make in
outcomes incredibly powerful
ILO Activity/

SETTING THEORY”

questions:
 What theory stated above could you
use in goal setting?
 Explain with concrete examples why it
could be or it was useful for you?
 What are the possible challenges that
may hinder you from achieving your
goal? What will you do to successfully
achieve your goal?
