PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE

Predictive maintenance in electrical systems uses data analysis and real-

time monitoring to anticipate potential failures before they occur, allowing
for proactive maintenance and minimizing downtime.
It involves gathering data from sensors, analyzing it with AI and machine
learning, and taking action based on the insights gained.
This approach shifts from reactive repairs to proactive maintenance,
optimizing resource allocation and reducing costs
Why PdM is crucial in electrical systems

1. Avoids Unexpected Failures

2. Reduces Maintenance Costs
3. Improves Equipment Life
4. Minimizes Downtime
5. Enhances Safety

NEURAL NETWORKS
• Neural networks are a type of artificial intelligence (AI) model inspired
by how the human brain works.
• They consist of layers of interconnected “neurons”, which process
and learn patterns from data.
Data flows through the network in layers:
•Input Layer → takes in features (e.g., temperature, vibration)
•Hidden Layers → detect patterns and relationships
•Output Layer → gives predictions (e.g., fault or no fault)
The network adjusts its internal “weights” during training to improve
prediction accuracy.
Types of Neural Networks
• ANN (Artificial Neural Network): Basic form used for general
prediction/classification tasks.
• CNN (Convolutional Neural Network): Excellent for image-
based fault detection (e.g., thermal scans of equipment).
• RNN (Recurrent Neural Network): Designed for time-series
data; remembers past data.
• LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory): A special RNN that
captures long-term dependencies, useful for predicting equipment
trends.
ARCHITECTURE OF CONVOLUTION NEURAL NETWORK
NEURAL NETWORKS FOR PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE
1. Handle Large Volumes of Sensor Data
•Modern electrical systems are equipped with IoT sensors generating
massive real-time data (temperature, vibration, voltage, current, etc.).
•Neural networks can efficiently process and learn from this high-
dimensional data.
2. Detect Complex Nonlinear Patterns
•Electrical equipment behavior isn’t always linear.
•Neural networks can recognize subtle changes or patterns that traditional
statistical models might miss — such as:
• Early signs of transformer oil degradation
• Irregular motor vibrations before bearing failure
3. Automatic Feature Extraction
•Traditional models require manual feature engineering.
•Neural networks automatically learn relevant features during
training, saving time and reducing bias
4.Improved Fault Prediction Accuracy
•With enough training data, neural networks can predict faults with
high precision and reduce false alarms.
•They also adapt and improve over time as more data becomes
available.

Preprocessing
•Clean missing/noisy data
•Normalize values (e.g., 0–1)
•Optional: time/frequency feature extraction
Model Training
•Use ANN, CNN, or LSTM models
•Train on labeled data (split into train/test)
Fault Prediction & Alerts
•Predict faults or Remaining Useful Life (RUL)
•Trigger alerts when thresholds are crossed
Continuous Learning
•Update model with new data
•Feedback from outcomes improves accuracy

CONCLUSION
•Neural networks provide a powerful and scalable solution for
predictive maintenance (PdM) in electrical systems.
•By leveraging sensor data and learning from historical trends, they
enable early fault detection, helping avoid costly breakdowns and
improving overall system reliability.
•This approach reduces unscheduled downtime, enhances operational

•The future of PdM lies in fully integrated ecosystems combining AI,
IoT, edge computing, and automated decision-making, making
electrical infrastructure smarter and self-adaptive.
