COMMUNICATION

Generally people
communicate for three
basic purposes: to
inform, to
persuade, and to
entertain.
What is communication?
Communication is the process of
exchanging information and
meaning between or among
individuals through a common
system of symbols, signs, and
behavior.
• It can be defined as “sharing
of ideas or feelings with
others”.

• Communication takes place

when one person transmits
information and understanding
• There is communication when
you respond or listen to
someone.
• Movements of lips, the wave of
hands, or the wink of an eye
may convey more meaning
than even written or spoken
words.
Other words used to describe
the communication process
include conversing, speaking,
corresponding, writing, and
listening.
ELEMENTS OF
COMMUNICATION
• SOURCE
• MESSAGE

SOURCE (Sender)
• The person attempting to
share information
• It is the sender, speaker,
issuer or writer, who intends
to express or send out
message.
The sender carefully designs a
message by selecting
(1) words that clearly convey the
message and (2) non-verbal signals
(gestures, posture, facial expression,
and so on) that reinforce the verbal
message.
MESSAGE
• It is simply the information you want to
communicate.
• It is also known as the subject matter of
the process.
• The information, ideas or thoughts
conveyed by the speaker in words or
actions.
• Example: the content of a letter, speech,
order, information, idea or suggestion.
ENCODE(ENCODING)
• The process of converting the
message into words, actions, or
other forms that the speaker
understands.
• The process of selecting and
organizing the message
CHANNELS
• This serves as the vehicle used in
transmitting messages or ideas.
• It can be personal or non-personal,
written, verbal (words), or nonverbal
(actions, gestures, facial expression),
in which the encoded message is
conveyed.
Three typical communication
channels are two-way, face-
to-face; two-way, not face-
to-face; and one-way, not
face-to-face.
RECEIVER
•The recipient of the
message or someone
who decodes the
message.
DECODE (decoding)
•The process of
interpreting the encoded
message.
FEEDBACK
• The reactions, responses or
information provided by the
receiver.
• When the receiver responds to the
sender’s message, the response is
called feedback.
CONTEXT
• The environment where
communication takes place

Barrier
• The factors that affects the
flow of communication.
