Metalloprotein
Name = Borse Madhuri Dipak
Class = M.Sc 1 (Analytical
Chemistry)
Topic = Metalloprotein
What is metalloprotein:
• Metalloproteins are proteins that contains a metal ion cofactor, which
is essential for their biological function.
• These metal ions can be either tightly bound to the protein.
Types of
Metalloprotein
1. Enzymes: Metalloenzymes use metal ions to catalyze chemical
reaction.
2. Transport proteins: Metalloproteins transport metal ions or other
molecules.
3. Storage proteins: Metalloprotein storage metal ion.
4. Regulatory proteins:Metalloproteins regulate genes expression to DNA
and RNA.
Common Metal ions
• Iron: Iron is a chemical element with the symbol Fe and atomic
number 26 it is a silvery-white and soft metal.In biological systems
iron plays a crucial role in various cellular processes including.
Example of proteins and their
functions
1. Hemoglobin
• Hemoglobin are metalloprotein.
• Found in red blood cells(RBCs).
• Red colour of blood is because of hemoglobin(HB).
• O2 transfer from hemoglobin.
2. Myoglobin:
• Myglobin present in muscles.
• Oxygen storage for mypoglobin.
• Simple structure of myoglobin compare to hemoglobin.
• 153 amino acid are present in myoglobin.
3. Cytochromes
• Cytochromes are redox-active proteins.
• Central Fe atom present in cytochromes.
• These are electrons transferred.
• These are four types:-
Cytochrome a – heme A
Cytochrome b – heme B
Cytochrome c – heme C
Cytochrome d – heme d
4. Rubredoxin
• Low molecular weight.
• A bacterial protein.
• It involve in electron transfer.
• It has regular tetrahedral structure.
Medicine:
• Antibacterial agents: Metalloproteins like lactoferrin have antibacterial
properties.
• Anticancer agents: Metalloproteins like cisplatin are used in cancer
treatment.
Environmental Science
1. Water Purification: Metalloprotein can be used to remove heavy
metals and other pollutants from water.
2. Soil remediation: Metalloprotein can be used to clean a
contaminated soil.
