The Chain Rule for Differentiation
Another useful tool in differentiating functions is the Chain Rule.

There are some functions that are formed out of simpler functions,
called composite function.
y = h(x) = f[g(x)]

Then y = f[g(x)] is a composite function since y is a function of u and

u is a function of x.
The Chain Rule. Suppose that g is a differentiable function of x
and f is a differentiable function of g(x). Then the composite
function f◦g is differentiable at x, and its derivative is given by

(f ◦ g)’(x) = f’(g(x))∙g’(x)
Example 1. Determine f’(x) if f(x) = .

Solution:
g(x) = (2x2-1)1/2 h(x) = 2x2-1
g’(x) = ½ (2x2-1)1/2-1 = ½ (2x2-1)-1/2 h’(x) = 2(2)x2-1 = 4x

from (f ◦ g)’(x) = f’(g(x))∙g’(x)

f’(x) = ½ (2x2-1) -1/2 (4x)

The General Power Rule for
Differentiation
Let g be a differentiable function and f be defined as f(x)
=(g(x))r, where r is any rational number. Then, f is
differentiable and its derivative is given by

f’(x) = r(g(x))r-1∙g’(x)
Example 2. Find the derivative of y = (2x-9) 3.

Solution:
g(x) = 2x-9
g`(x) = 2
r=3
From,
f’(x) = r(g(x))r-1∙g’(x)

y`= 3(2x-9)3-1 ∙ (2)

y` = 6(2x-9)2
Example 3
Determine the derivative of f(x) = (3x-5)2.
Solution:
g(x) = 3x-5
g`(x) = 3
r=2
From,
f’(x) = r(g(x))r-1∙g’(x)

f`(x)= 2(3x-5)2-1 ∙ (3)

f`(x) = 6(3x-5)
f(x) = (3x-5)2

f(x) = (3x-5) (3x-5)

f(x) = 9x2-15x-15x+25
f(x) = 9x2-30x+25
f’(x) = 9 (2) x2-1 – 30

f’(x) = 18 x – 30
f’(x) = 6(3x-5)
Quiz:

1.y = (4x+3)5
