OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH

Public
Learning outcomes
At the end of this topic, you should be
able to:
• Define research
• Identify the characteristics of good
research.
• Describe the importance of research.

Public
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• Research involves the collection of information
• more than just reading a few books or articles,
talking to a few people or asking them
questions
• collecting data is part of the research process
• If it is not undertaken in a systematic way, on
its own and in particular with a clear purpose, it
will not be seen as research .

Public
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• the term ‘research’ can be used :
– to get an idea or product noticed by people
– to suggest that people should have confidence in it.
• In such instances, when you ask for details of the
research process, these are either unclear or not
forthcoming.
• increase knowledge, offer proof for or against
theories, and deepen our grasp of a given topic
or area of study.
Public
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• organised, rigorous process of inquiry
• goal of finding, analysing, and improving
hypotheses, facts, or applications.
• It entails gathering, analysing, and interpreting
facts or information in order to find answers
to particular queries, work through issues, or
investigate novel concepts.

Public
WHAT IS NOT RESEARCH?
• Data are collected, perhaps from a variety of
different sources, and then assembled in a
single document with the sources of these
data listed.
• no interpretation of the data collected
• while the assembly of data from a variety of
sources may be part of the process of
research, without interpretation it is not
research.

: To find things out
Public
research is…
• something that people undertake in order to
find out things in a systematic way, thereby
increasing their knowledge.
• “Systematic Research” and “To find out
things“

Public
Systematic
• suggests that research is based on logical
relationships and not just beliefs.
• research will involve an explanation of the
methods used to collect the data
• will argue why the results obtained are
meaningful
• explain any limitations that are associated
with them.

Public
“ To find out things”
• suggests there are a multiplicity of possible
purposes for your research.
• may include describing, explaining,
understanding, criticising and analysing.
• a clear purpose or set of ‘things’ that you want
to find out, such as the answer to a question
or number of questions

Public
Business Research Defined

Business Research Defined
• This definition suggests that business research
information is:
– not intuitive or haphazardly gathered
– accurate and objective
– relevant to all aspects of the business

Importance of research
• Increasing Knowledge:
– Whether in the scientific sciences,
social sciences, or humanities, research
advances our knowledge of the world.
It advances human understanding
through assisting with questions,
issues, and the discovery of new
information.
Public
Importance of research..
Innovation:
• Research encourages the creation of
novel technologies, goods, and
procedures. It lays the groundwork for
innovations in disciplines like medicine,
engineering, and technology that can
enhance our quality of life.

Problem Solving:
• Problem identification, analysis, and solution
are all steps in a methodical research process.
It enables methodical problem-solving by
enabling us to approach problems and
difficulties in a structured manner.

Public
Importance of research….
• Making Informed Decisions:
– To make decisions, individuals,
corporations, and policymakers all rely
on research. Research gives the
information and facts required to make
well-informed decisions, whether they
are for developing public policies,
introducing a new product, or picking a
course of action.
Public
Examples of research areas
• Adoption of selected technology
• Purchase behavior of a selected product
• Company performance
• Students academic performance
• Entrepreneurial Behavior
• Economic growth of selected countries

Public
The most significant component of
research is methodology. Without a
sound technique, it is impossible to
produce results that can be relied
upon, let alone discussions and
conclusions.
