RC Phase Shift Oscillator Presentation

The RC Phase Shift Oscillator is an electronic circuit that generates sine waves using a combination of resistor-capacitor networks and an amplifier, achieving a total phase shift of 360°. It is primarily used in audio frequency applications and requires a gain of at least 29 to maintain oscillation. The oscillator is simple, cost-effective, and suitable for low-frequency applications, but has limitations in high-frequency performance and stability.

What is an Oscillator?
• An oscillator is an electronic circuit that
generates a repetitive waveform.
• Types:
• - RC Oscillator
• - LC Oscillator
• - Crystal Oscillator
• - Wien Bridge Oscillator
• Applications: Clocks, Signal Generators,
Radios, etc.
What is a Phase Shift Oscillator?
• An RC Phase Shift Oscillator uses a
combination of resistor-capacitor (RC)
networks and an amplifier.
• It shifts the phase of the signal by 180° using
RC stages and another 180° by the amplifier,
achieving a total of 360° (0°).
• It is mainly used for generating sine waves in
the audio frequency range.
Block Diagram
• The oscillator consists of:
• - Amplifier (transistor or op-amp)
• - RC Phase Shift Network
• - Feedback loop

• Total phase shift = 360°

Phase Shift Network
• Uses 3 cascaded RC sections.
• Each RC section provides a 60° phase shift.
• Total 180° phase shift from RC network.
• Amplifier provides another 180° phase shift.
Circuit Diagram
• RC Phase Shift Oscillator consists of:
• - 3-stage RC network
• - Amplifier (transistor/op-amp)
• - Feedback loop

• [Accurate circuit diagram will be inserted

later]
Components Used
• Common Components:
• - Resistors (10kΩ – 100kΩ)
• - Capacitors (10nF – 100nF)
• - Transistor (BC547) or Op-Amp (741)

• Selection based on desired frequency range

and gain.
Frequency of Oscillation
• The frequency of oscillation is given by:

• f = 1 / (2πRC√6)

• Where:
• R = Resistance in ohms
• C = Capacitance in farads

• Applies for a 3-stage RC network.

Gain Requirement
• To maintain oscillation, gain A ≥ 29 (for 3 RC
stages).

• In transistor circuits, gain is set via biasing

resistors.
• In op-amp circuits, gain is set via feedback
resistors.
Applications
• - Audio signal generation
• - Function generators
• - Sine wave generation
• - Testing & lab instruments
Advantages & Limitations
• Advantages:
• - Simple & cost-effective
• - Good for low-frequency applications

• Limitations:
• - Not ideal for high-frequency
• - Moderate frequency stability
Conclusion
• RC Phase Shift Oscillator uses RC networks +
amplifier to produce sustained sine wave
output.
• Key Point: Total 360° phase shift is necessary
for oscillation.
