LESSON 4 - Normal Distribution

The document explains the properties of the normal distribution, also known as the bell curve, which is characterized by its symmetrical shape, equal mean, median, and mode, and the influence of mean and standard deviation on its appearance. It outlines the empirical rule, stating that approximately 68%, 95%, and 99.7% of data fall within one, two, and three standard deviations from the mean, respectively. Additionally, it includes examples and activities related to calculating probabilities and sketching normal distributions.

Lesson 4 : The Normal
Distribution and Its
Properties
Understanding Normal
A normal distribution is a
distribution
type of density curve that is
bell-shaped for this reason
the normal distribution is
sometimes called the bell
curve or the normal curve.
The normal distribution
describes the tendency for
data to cluster around a
central value, in fact this
properties of a normal
curve
1. The curve of the
distribution is a bell-
shaped.
properties of a normal
curve
2. The curve is
symmetrical about the
mean.
properties of a normal
curve
3. The mean, median and
mode are of equal values and
when sketched, they coincide
at the center of the graph.
The change of value of the mean shifts the graph
of the normal curve to the right or to the left.

High Mean Low Mean

properties of a normal
curve
4. The width of the curve is
determined by the standard
deviation of the distribution.
The standard deviation determines the shape of
the curve (height and width) .

Large Standard Deviation

curve is short and wide
Small Standard Deviation
curve is skinnier and taller
properties of a normal
curve
5. The curve extends
indefinitely approaching the x-
axis but never touching it.
Thus, the curve is asymptotic
to the line.

6. The
curve area of the region
under the curve is 1. It
represents the probability or
percentage
or proportion associated with
the specific sets of
measurement values.

curve
7. Every normal curve
corresponds to the
“empirical rule” (also
called the 68 - 95 -
99.7% rule):
EMPIRICAL RULE
• The EMPIRICAL RULE is
also referred to as the
68-95-99.7% Rule.
• Approximately 68% of
the data lie within 1
standard deviation of the
mean.
EMPIRICAL RULE

• Approximately 95% of
the data lie within 2
standard deviations of
the mean.
EMPIRICAL RULE

• Approximately 99.7%
of the data lie within 3
standard deviations of
the mean.
Validating the empirical rule
• What is the frequency and relative frequency of babies
weights that are within:
Mean = 6.11
Standard

= 1.63

a.) One standard deviation

b.) Two standard deviations

from the mean
34 out of 36, Or 94%

c.) Three standard

deviations from the
mean
36 out of 36, Or 100%
Example #2

Statistics and Probability quarterly examination are
normally distributed with a mean of 35 and standard
deviation of 5.

Answer the following questions.

a. What percent of the scores are between 30 to 40?

b. What scores fall within 95% of the distribution?

1. Draw or sketch a normal distribution with a mean of 83 and standard deviation
of 12.
2. The scores of the Final examination in midterm exam in General Mathematics
are normally distributed with a mean of 16 and standard deviation of 4.5
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
a. Draw or sketch the normal distribution.
b. What percent of the scores are between 7 and 25?
c. What scores fall within the 68% of the distribution?
d. What percent of the scores are between 2.5 to 29.5?
3. What is the empirical rule?
4. If the Mean is high, the curve shifts to the _________.
5. If the standard deviation is small, the curve is _______ and ______.
