INTRODUCTION
• Introduction to Data Organization and
Management is a one-semester, 2-unit, 100-
level core course available to students
registered for the B.Sc. and B.Sc. (Hons.) in
Data Management, Communications
Technology and Computer Science.
The overall aim of Introduction to Data Organization and
Management:

 Is to introduce the basic principles of data, information and


knowledge organization and management.

 Learn about various definitions of data, information and


knowledge

 Learn various information systems within which data are created


and managed, and about practical methods for organizing and
managing data in different information systems and contexts.
WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE WORD
DATA?
Unit 1: Data, Information and Knowledge
The 1988 Webster's Encyclopaedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Dictionary says
that data (singular, datum) as 'facts, information, statistics, or the like, either historical or
derived by calculation or experimentation.

This definition suggests that data are usually in the form of numbers and statistics
obtained from scientific experiments or computations, and take the form of statistics.

What the Definition of Data above is saying is that, this is just a raw facts or statistics
collected together to make analysis. It could be Numbers, Symbols, Pictures, texts, figures

Data can be defined as an information, especially facts or numbers, collected to


be examined and considered and used to help with making decisions.
Data versus Precepts Precepts refer to the sensations we get when

information as knowledge

research or instruction.

Information is the idea or knowledge


that someone seeks to represent with
some words, numbers or images.
Information is also the idea or
knowledge that someone is able to
infer from those words, numbers of
images.
Knowledge is the extent of conversant or familiarity by particular
individuals, communities, or mankind as a whole, with certain
facts, truths, principles or subjects. Knowledge consists of facts,
truths and ideas that fit together to form a coherent and meaningful
whole.
A data source is any medium that has been used to convey data
symbols. These sources include various types of documents,
including paper documents, computer documents etc.

Sources of Data are also sources of Information.

This course, Data organization and management aim to improve
your knowledge of the principles of effective creation, organization
and management of data, and to some extent, information and
knowledge.

Data Organisation
• Data organization is concerned with the
selection, combination, arrangement and
formatting of symbols such as words, numbers
and images to form data. The aim of data
organization is to facilitate effective storage,
transfer, computation or interpretation of the
data by either human beings or machines.
Data Management
Data management refers to the various activities that must be
performed by individuals or organizations to ensure that only
useful data are created for conveying information;
a. that the data are appropriately organized, analysed, stored
and retrieved;
b. that data are efficiently transferred across space and time
as needed; that data are effectively protected from loss or
damage;
c. and that data are properly interpreted, analysed and used to
obtain information.
