Chapter 2 focuses on a study of the nest building behavior of social weavers, specifically the White-browed Sparrow-weaver. The tutorial aims to assess skills in data collection, display, and conclusion drawing, with students required to create tables and figures based on photographic evidence of nest distributions. Participants must also formulate a title, hypothesis, and prediction for the study, culminating in a report submission.

Chapter 2
Weaver bird study (TUT)
Working groups: Pairs Assessment Table, graph and discussion must be completed during this tutorial The aim of this tutorial is to determine whether you are mastering the following skills: Collection of data in a suitable table Display data in a suitable figure Drawing conclusions from the evidence White-browed Sparrow-weaver Nests Fact file Social weavers build nests in thorn trees
Nests are untidy and badly made from grass stems
Birds like to build nests close together
The sun is hottest between 12:00 and 15:00 hr
New nests are built each Spring
Storms usually blow from the South West
A scientist decided to investigate the nest building behaviour of social weavers. She decided to take close-up photographs from above selected tress and to aid counting, she divided the pictures into sectors like the sectors of a clock.
She oriented her pictures so that 12 o’ clock
faced north.
Each nest shown in the four trees she
photographed, was represented with a black box Her photographs showed the following nest distributions: Discuss and plan each section of this report with your partner Make up a suitable title for this study(must include the organism & its behaviour) Write a suitable hypothesis for this study Then write a prediction Draw a suitable table to summarise the data from the photographs of the nest distributions. Decide on a suitable figure to summarise the results in one way, then draw the figure (scatter, histogram or a pie chart) Write a discussion on the observed distribution of weaver nests Marks = 17 Hand in your reports!
