Smart Helmet

The document presents a proposal for a smart helmet designed to detect alcohol levels in riders to prevent drunk driving and enhance motorcycle safety. It outlines the motivation behind the project, existing systems, and the proposed system's functionality, which includes stopping the motorcycle from starting if alcohol levels exceed a set threshold. The objective is to reduce motorcycle accidents and promote helmet use through advanced technology integration.

Introduction
• Drunk driving is a significant problem in modern society,
causing countless injuries and fatalities every year.

• According to the National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration (NHTSA), drunk driving accounted for 28%
of all traffic fatalities.

• In response to this problem, many efforts have been made

to develop innovative technologies that can help prevent
drunk driving, such as the smart helmet system.

• The basic idea behind the smart helmet system is to use

various sensors and monitoring devices to detect the
presence of alcohol in a driver's breath
Motivation
• Road accidents are increasing in our country, most of
them are caused due to negligence of not wearing
the helmet, drink and drive and over speeding which
many leads to death or severe injuries.

• This motivates us to think about making a system

which ensures the safety of biker, by making it
mandatory to wear the helmet to prevent head
injuries that may lead to immediate death, prevent
drink and drive scenario by testing the breath of the
rider before the ride, prevent over speeding and rash
riding by alerting the rider.
Objectives
• The main objective of this system is to design a helmet that
provides safety to motorcyclist and to prevent drink and drive.

• Drunk and drive accident avoidance using alcohol sensor

threshold value.

• To lower the number of accidents among motorcyclists.

• To enhance rider safety by integrating advanced technology.

• Encourage and enforce the use of helmets while riding.

• Reduce instances of driving under the influence by providing

real-time alerts.
Literature Survey
• Smart helmets represent an innovative advancement in enhancing rider safety by
integrating various technologies, particularly focusing on alcohol detection.

• According to the Research paper in 2015 titled ‘Microcontroller based smart wear
for driver safety’, In this paper author has discussed on the speed of the vehicle.

• Research paper in 2015 titled ‘Smart Helmet’, In this project the author has
proposed the smart helmet because of growing bike accident. But in this project
author have not focused on the major issue that will occur in future regarding the
alcohol and many other.

• According to the recent Research paper in 2016 titled ‘2 Helmet using GSM and GPS
technology for accident detection and reporting system, the author specially
developed this project to improve the safety of the bikers
Existing System
• Breathalyzer-integrated helmets detect alcohol levels from
the rider's breath, offering high accuracy but requiring the
rider to blow into the sensor.

• Skin sensor helmets measure alcohol levels through the

skin for continuous monitoring, though accuracy can vary.

• Multi-sensor systems combine different methods to

improve reliability, but they are more complex and costly.

• While effective, these systems continue to evolve to

address limitations and improve practicality and accuracy.
Problem Statement
• Drunk driving has been the major reason for road accidents and death
across many countries despite strict rules laid by government
authorities on it.

• Motorcyclists are now extremely exposed, lacking the physical

protection a car driver has. However, traditional monitoring and
prevention of drink drive like on-road checks are frequently insufficient
or untimely.

• So we need an active measure to help entities save intoxicated people

from driving motorcycles, and thus reduce the possibility of accidents.
Proposed System
• A smart helmet is a special idea which makes two-wheeler driving safer than before.

• The system proposed is a smart helmet with an alcohol sensing unit. This helmet has
the basic function of detecting alcohol in rider's breath.

• When the set threshold of alcohol is exceeded, then the system in place will stop
your motorcycle from starting and sound an alert buzzer to let you as well as other
near individuals.

• The system comprises various components, including alcohol sensors, a

microcontroller, display and alert systems.

• The main objective of this project is to build a safety system which is integrated with
the smart helmet and intelligent bike to reduce the probability of two-wheeler
accidents and drunk driver cases.
