Chapter 1

The Adama Wind Park in Ethiopia has an installed capacity of 51MW with 34 wind turbines, generating an annual energy output of 162.7GWh. The project, costing approximately 117.9945 million USD, was financed primarily by the Chinese government and aims to enhance energy reliability while reducing fossil fuel usage. Additionally, the document discusses the types and components of wind turbines, focusing on the horizontal axis wind turbine used at the Adama site.

CHAPTER

IntroductionONE
 Adama Wind Park is located in the
middle of Ethiopia, about 95km from
Addis Ababa and 3kmfrom Nazret, with
altitude elevation of 1824-1976m.
 Adama wind park is located in a strip
of land, stretching fromnortheast to
southwest, 400~600m wide and 5km
long.
 The total installed capacity of Adama I
wind farm is 51MW,and 34 Gold wind
GW77 wind turbines with unit capacity of
1.5MW are installed, the annual energy
output is 162.7Gwh,The average
equivalent full load operation hours is
3189h.
 The investment of the project amounts to
117Million USD and the interest incurred in
the construction period amounts to 0.9945
Million USD, The total investment of the
project amounts to 117.9945 Million USD.
 The project was financed by the
government of China through Exim Bank
Of china, covering 85%and the rest of 15
% was covered by the Government of
Ethiopia.

 The installed capacity of the sector is
51MW, with 34 sets of wind turbines of
1500KW.
 Adama I wind has an average annual
energy output of 162.7 GWh.
overall objectives of adama1
wind power project
1. to generate a firm energy of 162.7GWh per
year.
2. to increase the capacity of the system by
51MW.
3. to play a meaningful role in the
environmental improvement of the country
by reducing uses of fossil fuel, fire wood.
4. to provide reliable power and energy to the
country’s grid thereby reducing power
shortages
Chapter two
wind turbine
The one we have seen during our internship is
about wind turbine.
 A wind turbine is a device that converts the

kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy,

which can then be transformed into electricity.
Types of Wind Turbine
There are two types of wind turbine. Those
are:
1) Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine(HAWT)

2) Vertical Axis Wind Turbine(VAWT).

1 Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine
The rotor shaft is mounted horizontally and
aligned parallel to the wind direction.
Typically features two or three blades that
rotate around a horizontal axis.
It has Higher efficiency and energy output,
especially in strong winds.
It is Easier to maintain and repair due to
accessible components.
2 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
 The rotor shaft is mounted vertically,
perpendicular to the wind direction.
 It Can have various configurations, including
Darrieus (curved blades) and Savonius (scooped
blades).
 It Can capture wind from any direction without
needing to adjust orientation.
 Generally safer for birds and less visually intrusive.
 Adama1 wind power plant company uses the
former one which is horizontal axis wind
turbine.
Components of wind turbine
 Wind turbine has many components.I saw
and discussed the following components
during my internship period.
 1 Tower
 The structure that supports the nacelle
and rotor blades,(since they are positioned
at the top of the at the tower) elevating
them to a height where wind speeds are
higher and more consistent.
 2,Nacelle
 Nacelle is the housing that contains the
turbine's critical components, including
the gearbox, generator, and control
systems.
It's positioned at the top of the tower.
 3 Generator
 Generator is a device which Converts
the mechanical energy into electrical
energy.
 4 Yaw mechanism
 This system allows the turbine to rotate
and face the wind direction, optimizing
performance.
 Yaw motor positioned Under this
mechanism.
