Theory
• Spring is clamped vertically at the P and
loaded with a mass m at the other point A
• Spring extends at O by adding a suitable
weight to the free end A
• Suppose extention is l

Now ,
m.g=kl
so, k=m./l x g ……..(1)

The Period of Vibration of the Spring

Now ,
Consider the kinetic energy of a spring and its load undergoing a

the load 𝑚. be moving with velocity 𝑣. (as shown in figure-1). At

simple harmonic motion. At the instant under consideration, let

the same instant, an element 𝑑𝑚 of the mass 𝑚 of the spring will

also be moving up but with a velocity 𝑣 which is smaller than 𝑣.. It
is evident that the ratio between 𝑣 and 𝑣0 is just the ratio
between 𝑦 and 𝑦..
Apparatus
• A Spiral Spring
• Convenient masses with
hanging arrangement
• Clamp
• Stop watch
• Scale
Procedure
● Attach a spring to a rigid framework
● Measure spring length by meter scale
● Set a Scale behind the spring for ● Now measure time for 20 vibration.
measure the extension of the spring ● Repeat Same operation at least 6 times
● Add suitable weight body to the position with different Loads
O. ● Draw the first Graph with added body m.
● Measure the position of Previous position in grams against the extensions of the
O to extension position l spring l in cm
● Pulled of from O to a moderately low ● Draw another graph t2 vs m.
Position B then let it go. ● Calculate the slope value using 1 st graph
● The spring was executed to a simple & get effective mass of the spring from
harmonic motion and vibrated to a 2nd graph.
simple harmonic motion like up and
down.
Observation

• Length of the spiral ,l =12 cm

• Original mass of the spring, m = 10gm

Graph
Calculation
We know,

=>k=g/(l/m.)
Here l/m. is the slope from the first graph, k=g/slope dyne/cm

From the First graph We have, slope= 0.1091

So, k=g/slope
=9.8/.1091
=89.82dyne/cm
Result,
The original mess of the spring M=10gm spring constant k=89.82 dyne/cm
So the effective mass is =m/3 gm Experimental effective mess, m’=0.004gm
=10/3 gm
=3.33 gm

From 2nd Graph we got effective mess, m’=0.004gm
