Use of Manipulatives

Manipulatives are physical objects used in mathematics instruction to help students understand abstract concepts through hands-on interaction. Their strategic use enhances comprehension, engagement, and provides opportunities for authentic assessment, leading to improved learning outcomes. Guidelines for effective use include introducing the manipulatives, providing clear instructions, observing student interactions, and offering support as needed.

use of

manipulatives
objective:
• Develop a manipulative to aid
mathematical instruction.
Manipulatives are concrete objects (blocks,
tiles, geometric figures) that help students
understand abstract math concepts through
interaction (touching and moving). Their use
is not new; examples include the abacus and
Inca quipo. Modern educators like Froebel
and Montessori championed their use. The
DepEd (Department of Education in the
Philippines) curriculum now incorporates
manipulatives.
• Deeper Understanding: Manipulatives help students
grasp mathematical concepts more effectively.

• Genuine Assessment: They allow teachers to observe

and assess students' mathematical thinking processes.

• Improved Teaching: Observing students' interactions

with manipulatives provides immediate feedback,
helping teachers improve future lessons.
guidelines for using manipulatives in the
1.Orientation: classroom
• Start by introducing the manipulative to students. Let them
explore the object and its uses.
• Give them time to play with it and discover what they can do.
2. Clear Instructions:
• Provide specific instructions on how to use the manipulative.
• State the goal of the activity and how the manipulative can
help students achieve it.
3. Observe and Encourage:
• Pay attention to students' interactions with the manipulative.
• Listen to their mathematical discussions and use their ideas to
enhance the learning process.
4. Scaffolding:
• If students are struggling, ask them "why" and "how" questions
to help them understand the concepts.
• Provide support to guide them through the activity.
Availability of Manipulatives:
• Many manipulatives are commercially
available, such as Base 10 Blocks,
geoboards, play money, and paper clocks.
• You can also create your own manipulatives
using readily available materials like
popsicle sticks, buttons, boards, fasteners,
etc.
• Creating your own manipulatives is cheaper
and allows for customization according to
your needs.
The strategic use of manipulatives in mathematics
instruction offers significant advantages. By bridging
the gap between abstract concepts and concrete
representations, manipulatives enhance
understanding, boost student engagement, and
provide valuable opportunities for authentic
assessment. The thoughtful integration of
manipulatives into classroom activities can lead to
improved learning outcomes and a more positive
learning experience for all students.
