Arithmetic Sequence

An arithmetic sequence is defined as a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by adding a constant, known as the common difference (d), to the preceding term. The nth term of an arithmetic sequence can be calculated using the formula an = a1 + (n-1)d. The document includes examples, exercises, and assignments to practice finding terms and common differences in arithmetic sequences.

ARITHMETIC

SEQUENCE
Consider the following sequences and observe
how the succession of term is obtained
A.1,3, 5, 7,….
B.-3, -6, -9, -12,…..
C.1, 1.5, 2, 2.5,3….
D.15, 25,35,45,55
An ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE is a
sequence in which each term after the first
is obtained by adding a constant d to the
preceding term. The constant number d is
called the common difference.
Describing an Arithmetic Sequence
In symbol if a1, is the first term, and d is the common
difference, then the terms of an arithmetic sequence can be
enumerated in the following manner:
a1= the first term
a2 = a 1 + d
a3 =(a1 +d) + d or a1 + 2d
a4= (a1 + 2d) +d or a1 +3d
This shows that the coefficient of d is one less than the
number of terms. In general, an=a1 + (n-1)d
The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is defined as
an= a1 + (n-1)d
where a1= first term
an= the nth term
d= the common difference
Example:
1. The fourth term of an arithmetic sequence is 18 and
the sixth term is 28. Give the first 3 terms.
2. Give the next three terms of the sequence 5, 9, 13,
17, 21, 25,….Then graph the sequence.
3. Give the next three terms of the sequence -8,-5,-2,
1, 4,…Then graph the sequence
Finding the Common Difference and the nth Term
of an Arithmetic Sequence
A. Determine whether the sequence is arithmetic. If it is, give
the common difference
1. -3, 2, 7, 12…
2. 4, 8, 16, 32…
B. Find the 14th term of the arithmetic sequence 5,7,9,11….

C. In the arithmetic sequence -7, -4, -1, 2….What term is 44?

TEST YOURSELF
A. Write the first five terms of the arithmetic sequence from the given data
1. a1 =15, d=3
2. a1 =-18, d=7
B. Give the common difference and find the indicated term in each
arithmetic sequence
3. 13, 9, 5, 1…..(a10)
4. -3, -3/2, 0…..(a25)
C. Answer the following
5. Find the 11th term of the arithmetic sequence 3, 4, 5
6. Find the 42nd term of the sequence 5,10,15…
7. If a1 =5, an =395 and d= 5,find the value of n.
Assignment:
1. Write the first three terms of an arithmetic sequence if the
fourth term is 10 and d= -3.
2. In the arithmetic sequence 8,5,2,-1….what term is -25?
3. Find the term required in the arithmetic sequence.
a. the sixth term of 2, 6, 10…
b. the seventh term of 2, 11, 20…
c. the eight term of 9, 6, 3,..
END OF THE SESSION
