Objective and Learning Outcome

Objective
The main objective of this topics is to familiarize students with the different type of
input and output devices

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this topic students will be able to
 Explain the purpose of a computer keyboard used today.
 List several different pointing devices and describe their functions.
 Describe the purposes of scanners and readers and list some types of scanners and readers in use
today.
 Describe the characteristics of a display device and printers
Hardware (Input & Output Devices)
 Hardware: The physical parts of a
computer.
 Internal hardware
• Located inside the main box (system unit) of the
computer

 External hardware
• Located outside the system unit
• Connect to the computer via a wired or wireless
connection.
Computer Devices

 Input Devices
 Used to input data into the computer. (Captures data and send to computer system)
 Examples: Keyboards, mouse, scanners, cameras, microphones, touch pads, touch screens, fingerprint readers,
etc.

 Processing Devices
 Perform calculations and control computer’s operation
 Examples: Central processing unit (CPU) and memory

Output Devices
 Present results to the user
 Examples: Monitors, printers, speakers, projectors, etc.
Types of Input Devices

Following are the types of Input Devices

 Text Input Devices

 Pointing Input Devices
 Audio Input Devices
 Video Input Devices
Text Input Devices

 KEYBOARD: The most common type of text input device is keyboard

which accepts letters, numbers, and command from the users.
 A-Z letters, 0 – 9 numbers (separate numeric keypad), F1 – F12 function keys, special letters
and symbols.
 Wired and wireless.
 Different sizes.
Text Input Devices

TACTILE VERSUS TOUCH-SCREEN KEYBOARDS: Keyboards are of two types:

Tactile keyboards: Most desktop computers, some laptops, and the BlackBerry 10D smartphone
use tactile keyboards , or physical keyboards , which are perceptible to the sense of touch.
Touch-screen keyboards: Touch-screen keyboards , also called on-screen or virtual keyboards,
are those in which the image of a keyboard is displayed on a touch screen. Touch-screen
keyboards are standard on tablets, smartphones, and other mobile devices. A variation is the kind
of technology that, like the virtual keyboard, uses light (laser) to project a full-size computer
keyboard onto almost any surface
Text Input Devices

WIRED VERSUS WIRELESS KEYBOARDS: Wired keyboards connect a cable to the

computer usually via a USB port. Wireless keyboards are of two types:
• Infrared wireless keyboards: These keyboards use infrared-light (IR) technology to transmit
signals to a receiver device plugged into the computer, usually via a USB port. Such keyboards
have a transmission range of 6–10 feet and cannot have any obstacles in the transmission path
(called the line of sight).
• Radio-frequency wireless keyboards: Radio-based keyboards, which also transmit signals to a
receiver plugged into the computer, have a range of up to 100 feet and have no line-of-sight
problems.
Pointing Devices
 Any device used to control the movement of a
cursor and point things we want to point on a
computer screen.
MOUSE: This is used to select, open, close and
move items that are displayed on your displayed on
your monitor screen.
 The mouse pointer —an arrow, a rectangle, a
pointing finger, depending on where the pointer
is positioned—is the symbol that indicates the
position of the mouse on the display screen or
that activates commands
Pointing Devices
 Any device used to control the movement of a
cursor and point things we want to point on a
computer screen.
 MOUSE: This is used to select, open, close and
move items that are displayed on your displayed
on your monitor screen.
 Track Ball: Is like an upside down mouse. By
rolling the balls with yours fingers, you control
the on-screen pointer.
 Joystick: Is an input device that allows the user
to control a character or machine in a computer
program, such as a plane in a flight simulator.
Most commonly used in games.
Pointing Devices

 light pen: It allows the user to point to  Touchscreen: A touchscreen is a display

displayed objects, or draw on the screen with device that allows the user to interact with a
greater positional accuracy. computer by using their finger.
Optical Input Devices

Optical input devices translates images of Image Scanner: An image scanner is a

text, drawings, photos into digital form. digital device used to scan images, pictures,
printed text and objects and then convert
Fax machine: A fax machine is a device that them to digital images. That image has been

a telephone network.
Image Scanner
Types of Scanners:

1. Flatbed
A scanner that provides a flat, glass surface to
hold a sheet of paper, book or other object for
scanning. The scan head is moved under the
glass.

2. Handheld
A scanner that is moved by hand over the
material being captured. Handheld scanners are
small and less expensive and highly portable.
Webcam

 A webcam is an input device that captures photos and records videos from
its camera, which has a connection to the system and usually is kept facing
its user. A webcam is generally used to click photographs and make videos
by a computer system. It takes image files as inputs from where it is
pointed and uses them for video calls and capturing selfies. However, most
modern webcams are also associated with microphones built into them.
These offer advanced audio quality during the making of videos. They are
usually attached to computers and are also available in many laptops as
they are built into them.
