• Civics is derived from the Latin word civicus which
means “of the citizen.” It refers to the study of the rights and duties of citizenship. Core values: 1) good citizenship 2) social justice and democracy 3) ethical behavior 4) personal responsibility DEFINITION OF CIVICS
• In the Philippines, the subject
known as Sibika was part of the elementary school curriculum before it was changed to HEKASI (acronym for Heograpiya, Kasaysayan, at Sibika), which is a combination of geography, history, and civics. • In ancient Greece, a system, known as paideia exposed young Greeks to a wide variety of subjects intended to make them internalize the ideal of excellence and mold them into “perfect citizens” to achieve the state of a “perfect society.”
During the Age of Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques
Rousseau stood out to promote the “ideal man.” • This free individual is not a blind follower of society's laws but someone who does what is morally right. • Basically, a free individual who is knowledgeable in morality asks the question: “What is best for all?”. CITIZENS' ROLES

A good citizen possesses the virtues of integrity,
compassion, honesty, and respect for others. Society, therefore, expects much from him or her. • He or she is willing to volunteer even without any personal benefit or compensation. • He or she puts his or her heart into any project. • He or she shares his or her knowledge, skills, or expertise in his or her field of specialization. • He or she takes the time to get involved in what is happening in the community where he or she lives. Student activism was widespread in the
Philippines in the early 1960s and early 1970s owing to the decline in economic growth and increase in the unemployment rate. Today, activism on a local, national, and global level can take place digitally or online, called digital activism. THE ROLE OF ACTIVISM

The accessibility of social media has
increased awareness among individuals and elicited responses on various issues surrounding and affecting their communities. CIVIC PARTICIPATION IN THE PHILIPPINES CIVIC PARTICIPATION IN THE PHILIPPINES The National Services Training Program (NSTP) is a civic education and defense-preparedness program for college students established by virtue of Republic Act 8163, otherwise known as the National Service Training Program Act of 2001. CIVIC PARTICIPATION IN THE PHILIPPINES College students can choose from among three subprograms or components based on their needs or interests: Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS), Literacy Training Service (LTS), and Reserved Officers' Training Corp (ROTC)
1. The CWTS focuses on training
students pertaining to delivering basic services to marginalized communities CIVIC PARTICIPATION IN THE PHILIPPINES 2. The LTS focuses on training students to become future teachers of out-of- school and marginalized youth.
3. The ROTC includes military training
and education to mobilize the youth for national defense preparedness and to prepare them for service in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The revival of mandatory ROTC was approved in 2017 by President Duterte for grades 11 and 12 in public and National Youth Commission (NYC) is focused on youth development by creating principles and guidelines pertaining to an integrated national youth policy and implementing measures to redress the imbalances of the past relating to the various forms of disadvantages suffered by the youth.
The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) is a council meant to represent the youth
