Anything and Everything Can Be Read

Your gut reactions or feelings
Look back at your annotations for today.

Take a few minutes to label them as:


- Reflecting your personal history
- Social, reflecting the society you live in
- Rhetorical
- Questions for exploration
- Checked meaning of words
- Checked information online
- Agree / disagree
- Makes me happy / upset
- Duh-obvious / lost me here-difficult
- Doodles / images / punctuation marks ??? !
- Highlights / underlining only
- Other
Get in groups of 3

Compare your annotations:


- What types do you use most?
- Which fragments did you annotate? Did you friends react
to those same fragments or not?
- Are your annotations local only? Or do they help you
think beyond the text? If yes, to what, other writing, your
personal experiences, popular culture, etc.?
- Which type of annotations come easy, and which require
effort?
Compare your findings with other groups.

Class short discussion on


What, if anything, can our annotation styles reveal about:
- the depth of our reading?
- intellectual engagement in reading?
- levels of curiosity? curiosity in what?
- other?
Individually, reflect in writing on this activity. Use these as
guiding questions, but feel free to add more thoughts.

If I were judged on the basis on my annotations only, what


would my annotations tell the world about me?
Am I happy with the result? Do I feel these annotations reflect
my engagement in reading?
If yes, which ways of annotating reflect the best in me as a
reader?
If not, which ways of annotating do I want to start using to
better reflect my intellectual work?
Read your reflection.
