PERTCPM

The Critical Path Method (CPM) is a project management technique that identifies critical activities, where any delay will affect the entire project timeline. The process involves determining work activities, estimating completion times, establishing logical relationships, and performing calculations through forward and backward passes to find the earliest and latest start and finish times. References include a video tutorial and a comprehensive guide for managers on CPM.

CRITICAL PATH METHOD

Represent a series of activity for which each activity

is a critical activity.

Critical Activity: any delay on the start of finish of critical

activity will result in a delay in the entire project.
Major Steps in CPM

1.Determine the work activities: project breakdown

2.Estimate the time required to complete each activity
3.Determine the logical relationships:
4.Draw the Logic network and perform the CPM
calculations
CPM CALCULATION
Forward Pass
 Earliest Start Time (ES)
Earliest time an activity can start without delaying the project
ES= maximum EF of immediate predecessors
oES=Max (Ef)
 Earliest Finish Time (Ef)
Earliest time an activity can finish without delaying the
project.
Earliest Start time plus activity time
oEF=ES+t
CPM CALCULATION
Backward Pass
 Latest finish time (LF)
Latest time activity can be complete without delaying the
project
Late Finish= Minimum of late start of immediate successor
oLF= Min.(LS)
 Latest Start Time (LS)
Latest time activity an activity can start without delaying the
project
Latest finish minus activity time
oLS=LF-t
