Robotics Lesson 2

The document provides an introduction to the basic parts of LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0, including motors and sensors, and their functions. It outlines a motivational game for learners to understand robot components by simulating missing body parts and their corresponding robot sensors. Additionally, it details the components of robots, including sensors, controllers, and actuators, and includes a short activity for hands-on learning with the NXT Controller.

Introductio

n to the
Parts of
LEGO
Mindstorms
Target Skill/s

► List down basic parts of a simple

robot.
► Explain functions of each motor and
sensor in a LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0
MOTIVATIO
N
WHO WANTS TO PLAY A
GAME?
MOTIVATIO
N
Choose a partner.
Each pair will draw lots.
MOTIVATIO
Learner N
A must pretend not to have
the body part which they got, then
Learner B must act as Learner A’s
missing body part. For example, if the
pair picks eyes, then Learner A
pretends to be blind while Learner B
acts as his/her partner’s eyes.
Task
• Pairs with Eyes missing: Learner B must
guide Learner A through speech so the latter
can draw the given image on a piece of
paper.
• Pairs with Arms missing: Learner B must
grab an object on the table and describe its
texture to Learner A; Learner A must then
guess what the object is.
Task
• Pairs with Brain missing: Learner A must
move based on what Learner B says so the
former can transfer different objects from
one place to another.
• Pairs with Feet missing: The pair must go
around the classroom as Learner B gives
Learner A a piggyback ride. Switch roles if
Learner B can’t carry Learner A.
Robots also have basic parts just like
humans:

• Ultrasonic Sensor (Eyes)

• Touch Sensor (Arms)
• NXT Controller (Brain)
• Servo Motor (Feet)
LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is a
programmable robotics toy released by
the LEGO Group. It originated from the
programmable sensor blocks used in
LEGO’s line of educational toys. It
comes in a kit containing many pieces
including the controller, motor, and
sensors.

PARTS OF
ROBOTS
LEGO Mindstorms NXT
Servo Motor
The Servo Motor gives your robot the
ability to move. It uses a built-in rotation
sensor to accurately control the motor’s
output shaft. When programming a motor,
you can use degrees or rotation to specify
a desired position. For example, you can
specify a motor to rotate 90 degrees.
SERVO MOTOR
Touch Sensor
The Touch Sensor has an orange tip
known as a push button, which
provides the touch feature. When
pressed, the push button moves
backward into the sensor and sends
signal to the NXT Controller.
TOUCH SENSOR
Light/Color Sensor

The Light/Color Sensor is capable

of measuring light intensity. It
determines the brightness or
darkness of its surrounding area
and its surface, enabling it to
identify different colors.
LIGHT/COLOR
SENSOR
Ultrasonic Sensor

The Ultrasonic Sensor can detect

an object by determining the
distance between the sensor and
the object, allowing your creations
to “see”.

Components
of Robots
1. Sensors
These are devices that
measure a physical quantity
and convert it into an
appropriate signal or data,
which can be read by an
instrument or by a controller
(e.g. thermometer, light
sensor, cameras that record LIGHT SENSOR
and analyze data).
2. Controllers
These are devices that
manage, interpret, and
control the accepted
data to create an
action (e.g. integrated
circuits, LEGO NXT MICOCONTROLLER

Controller).
3. Actuators
These are devices
that are used to
move or control a
certain system or
machine (e.g motors
that move wheels or DC SERVO MOTOR

propellers).
Try Me
Try Me is an NXT Controller
menu that allows the user to
explore the function of each
motor and sensor. Make sure
you connect the motors and
sensors to their proper ports so
the NXT Controller will know
TRY ME
which to activate and listen to.
SHORT ACTIVITY - Introduction
to the Parts of LEGO
Mindstorms NXT 2.0

1. Divide the class into 3 groups

Group 1: Light/Color Sensor
Group 2: Ultrasonic Sensor
Group 3: Touch Sensor
2. Connect the assigned sensor to a port
using a data wire. Follow these port
assignments:

• Touch Sensor – Port 1

• Light/Color Sensor – Port 3
• Ultrasonic Sensor – Port 4
2. After creating your
simple robot, try the Try
Me feature in the NXT
Controller.

This will give you an idea

on what your sensor does.
Make sure to select the
option that matches your
assigned sensor.
IDENTIFICATION: Read each statement carefully,
then write the correct answer on the blank provided.

_____________1. This sensor can determine colors such as

blue, red, green, yellow, black, and white. It can also determine
the intensity or brightness of its surroundings.

_____________2. These are devices that can measure physica

quantity and convert it to an appropriate signal or data.

_____________3. This sensor can detect when its button is

pushed.
IDENTIFICATION: Read each statement carefully,
then write the correct answer on the blank provided.

_____________5. This sensor can detect an object by

determining the distance between the sensor and the object.

_____________6. These are sensors that are capable of

measuring the brightness or darkness of an object or
environment.

_____________7. This gives your robot the ability to move.

IDENTIFICATION: Given the EV3 Motor or
Sensor on the left column, write its NAME and
DESCRIPTION on the right column.
