Flood
Survivors
Interview 1
INTERVIEWEE: Pooja Sonavne
RELATION: Friend’s Mother
FLOOD SURVIVED: Mumbai Flood
Of 2017
Question 1
What were the conditions like
during the flood?
Response
I experienced a severe downpour in Mumbai during
Rakhi, and my family had to evacuate the venue for
the event due to flooding risk. The streets and the
hotel lobby were submerged by the time we reached.
We had to move to higher floors of the hotel. The
devastation outside with destroyed homes and safety
concerns due to 460mm of rainfall in 12 hours remains
a vivid memory
Question 2
How did they cope with the
Response
situation?
During the flood, I witnessed the city’s incredible
resilience. Local authorities like BMC, NDRF, and
Mumbai Police led rescue efforts using boats to save
those who were trapped. Various communities came
together opening homes to stranded commuters and
turning schools, offices, and places of worship into
shelters. Social media was crucial and helping people
coordinate these efforts and reach out to those in
need.
Question 3
What strategies did they use to mitigate the
effect of the flood?
Response
During the floods, NGOs and businesses quickly mobilized
to provide food, shelter, and medical aid. Social media
helped in coordinating efforts and sharing updates.
Despite efforts government delays highlighted the need
for better infrastructure. The government provided
medical aid and financial aid to those in need. This led
them to focus on improving drainage systems and disaster
preparedness in the future. But no aid could compensate
for the lives lost

In the 2017 Mumbai
rainfall led to severe flooding and
infrastructure damage, requiring
evacuations. Local authorities,
including the BMC, DRF, SDRF, and
Mumbai Police, conducted rescue
operations and set up shelters.
Communities provided support by
using social media for coordination.
NGOs and corporations also played a
key role in mitigation efforts, despite
some delays from the government.

FLOOD SURVIVED: Chennai Flood
Of 2015
Question 1
What were the conditions like
during the flood?
Response
Before coming to Pune, I was in Chennai during the 2015
floods. I was working as usual on that day, and it began to rain.
Since it was monsoon season, I didn’t think much of it. After
some time, the streets started to flood, so I stayed at my
workplace. The next day, I went home and found everything
completely flooded and destroyed. There was also a power
outage. The government was conducting rescue operations,
and I was taken to a shelter as everything was underwater.
Question 2
How did they cope with the
situation?
Response
We were taken to a shelter where we received food and first
aid. The police and local authorities were actively involved in
the rescue operation. At the shelter, we were kept informed
with updates. After the flood, we were given financial aid to
help reconstruct our home, but the loss of life was devastating.
We also received help from NGOs, and the rescue operations
were conducted continuously, day and night, saving many
lives. This is how they coped with the situation.
Question 3
What strategies did they use to mitigate the
effect of the flood?
Response
The authorities distributed relief supplies. They set up
emergency shelters and continuously conducted
rescue operations. They also provided us with money
to help rebuild our homes, along with flour, food, and
clothes. I still thank them for their help, as they made
the aftermath of the flood much easier for us.

During the 2015 Chennai floods,
heavy rains caused severe flooding,
and people also faced power
outages. Authorities like the SDRF
and NDRF conducted rescue
operations. Shelters were set up for
those who lost their homes,
providing first aid and food. The
government's and authorities' efforts
to mitigate the situation were
effective to some extent.
