Bioengineering

ALVARO
B DAY
Professional Aspects

 Diverse educational backgrounds

 Start their careers with a bachelors degree in biological
engineering, agricultural studies, biology, or the medical field
 Associates degree have a more specialized area such as organic
chemistry, biology, cellular biology, or bioscience
Principles of Bioengineering

 Rely on the basic principles of biology

 They're are 5 fields they cover
 Cell theory- The study of cell structures
 Evolution- The study of how organisms and species evolve from
different organisms
 Genetics- The study focused on the ways in which genes are
used inside the cell structure
 Homeostasis- The ability of an organism to regulate its
temperature in order to maintain a constant state
 Energy-
Biological Applications

 Engineers in biological fields use the five basic areas of biology

as a foundation for the problems they solve
 The three primary fields they use are:
 Biological Engineering
 Agricultural Engineering
 Biomedical Engineering
Biological Engineering

 Biological engineering has a dramatic impact on our society and

environment because of the focus on living materials and waste
 Use many different biological principles and tools to solve
biological problems
 Genetic Engineering- is done to change the properties of plants.
They use genomes of living objects to change the taste, growth,
and properties
 Biomass- is the biological materials that are used as a source of
energy to produce heat or electricity
Biological Engineering cont.

 Biochemical conversion- a method of bioconversion that uses

enzymes and other types of microorganisms to convert to
biomass materials into energy
 Fermentation- a process where microorganisms convert decomposing
biomass into liquid fuel alcohol
 Anaerobic digestion- a process that uses microorganisms to degrade
biological material
 Composting- a method used to create piles of biomass that
breakdown the biological composition of materials
 Thermochemical Conversion- uses heat to create a chemical
change in biological material
Agricultural Engineering

 Is a branch that focuses on crop and livestock

 Crop production- over the years engineers have been able to change the
characteristics of plants and animals through selective breeding.
 Genetically engineered crops- are crops whose genetic structure is
changed intentionally
 Herbicides- a type of pesticide that is used to kill weeds that may damage
the crops
 Crop yield- the seed generation of a plant
 Animal production- use biotechnology to improve the production of a
livestock
 Cloning- using genetic engineering to create an exact copy of an organism
 Processing of foods- to prepare raw materials or ingredients and prepare
them for human consumption
Biomedical Engineering

 Take the foundations of biology, including cell theory, evolution, genetics,

homeostasis, with the technology to create medicines, biotechnologies to
support the human system and to reach human potential
Biological Engineering with human beings
 The use of biotechnology and advancement of research over a 200 year
period that we now can cure disease, transplant organs and use cell therapy
to create new cells in the human body
 Monoclonal antibodies-natural antibodies in the human system that find
unwanted germs and attack them
 Medical Technologies
 The use of technology to diagnose, treat or monitor medical conditions in
humans
 DNA fingerprinting- a method used to identify a human through their genetic
makeup
Ethics

 Bioengineers deal with sensitive issues, such as life, human

growth, the environment, and economics. They must have a
grounding of their own morals
Biological Engineering in Action

 Developed different types of technology advances for many

different industries.
 To discover new types of information about the human body or
improvements to it
